I havnt driven a honda with IRS but between the steering lock, the heavy fuel consumption, gearbox problems and the locating pin snapping we really arnt impressed, we thought it was “acceptable” but far from ideal, I asked for the yam 450 on demo and it was leaps ahead in every way!

I might have to try one I've never really been a big Yammy fan! Might as well go for a 700 though! I'll be honest that 420 Hondas almost put me off them altogether but the 500 IRS is a very different bike. The fuel consumption is really good I've never had a problem with the manual box unfortunately the turning circle still ain't great!

Have always been surprised how Honda's fuel consumption seems to yoyo between models, some are good and some you wonder where it all went, it isn't used to produce power anyway.

Can-am here, the quad is an old foreman 420S and hasn't moved in a year, it is all done on foot, a 2 wheel bike, and a side by side if hosing down or need to carry kids and gear.

Had an old 400 canam and even though it sounded like a Cummins it would eat most 500s (and then circle back to tow them out)

Much depends on usage, if it is just transport not much wrong with a Honda 420, if it is hills and mud then a Canam 650 or 800 :) or 1000 :love: :)

Honda's are dramatically overpriced over here too if it's any consolation

Literally just gone through it here, so here's my opinion for all its worth...

The Honda 500 is gone. 520 has major upgrades for very little more £££ over the 500. I didn't/don't like the 500irs. Called into Lloyds to see the 520, they were sold out already at Dumfries and didn't know when another was coming in - but there were 6 in stock at Kelso... so I've not seen one in the flesh. Couldn't be bothered to wait.
520irs manual has power steering as standard and I was quoted £7,300

I don't like the CanAm. I've sat on a 450 and 570 and just wasn't... they do nothing for me. Didn't even bother with prices.

Yamaha 450 is a bloody nice bike, very well built and solid but feels very small. Best mate has an old model 450 (same engine) and old model Honda420 and says the Yamaha is too thirsty (he is a Yamaha man, and has owned countless models). Poorest ground clearance of all the bikes I looked at, and physical dimensions it was also the smallest/most compact. That may have made it a good bike - but I'm 6'1" and I felt hunched on it and like there was nothing around me.
450eps power steering (winch as standard) with mudguard extensions, receiver and ball hitch £6,850

Suzuki 500 is bloody lovely. Such a comfy bike to ride and drives really nice... within 20 seconds of just sitting on it I was sold.
500 with power steering (mud guard extensions standard), receiver, hitch, EASI registered £7,400
500 basic (as above but without power steering) £6,580. I can't understand how power steering (it is the only difference) adds £800...

No brainer for me, basic Suzuki 500 is being delivered next week.

Good choice I reckon! Should have spent the extra £800 though! ?

To add to this;

The single rear disc brake on the Honda is on the main drive shaft, between rear diff and gearbox. It is a total ball ache to work on (mechanics words).

The Suzuki 500 rear brake is a sealed, oil immersed multi-disc. Zero maintenance and will not wear out

Yeh suzuki 500 with power steering, best there is. I willbe replacing the older suzuki 400 in january and will probably try some of the cheaper options TGB 600 £5500, quadzilla cf moto 520 also with power steering for £4500 - how bad can they be... may be better of with another suzuki 500 though.

Had a try on local gamekeepers quadzilla as he was praising it so much..... I'm sure oil tankers have a tighter turning circle!!! I'd have no chance of reversing a trailer with a steering lock that poor
