Quad bike problem

Our quad bike stopped suddenly in the field the other day.
No warning, no nasty noises ,just stopped.
First thing , of course is press the starter to see if it would restart...nothing, completely dead.
So , thinking somehow the battery must be flat I tried jump leads on it.
As I completed the connections the starter fired itself up without me pressing the starter. Still didnt start though but in a way thats secondary because it shouldnt have tried starting.
Whats wrong with it ?
What will cause it to try to start without pressing the starter switch?

Actually its just had a new one so that has been on our mind, however its been running fine for a week or so after the new one

Could it just be a short across the terminals of that relay? I don't suppose you've had any wet weather recently that might have got in there?

Best take the spark plug out and with it resting on the cylinder, you should see a spark while cranking the engine over?

Not wanting to hijack this thread but my Honda 350 did exactly this last week. No ignition lights only turns over when solenoid is crossed over won’t start 30 amp fuse blown in box???

This afternoon I disconnected the solenoid and charged the battery then reconnected the solenoid.
It started properly and ran fine so we used it for a bit but later on it woudnt start and was totally dead again but at one point it went back to briefly spinning the starter motor when the starter was not pressed.
So I disconnected the solenoid and gave it a quick charge and its now starting properly although I havent used it since that charge.
It will be interesting to see what it does in the morning
