Don’t they waste a lot unrolling it on the ground, unless you’ve got lots of acres of rough grassland to unroll it on? Even then, a lot will surely be trod & shat on?

I know it all ends up back in the soil eventually, but lumps of fodder will be a pain to do anything with on an arable field (cover/root crops), or kill patches of grass in a grassland scenario? Isn’t that why feeders were originally invented?

It doesn't kill patches. Can waste a bit, especially if giving more than they will clear in 1 sitting. But it's feeding the soil so it's not waste.
But don't you get any waste with a feeder?
And trash an area of field.

They do, and I don’t like feeders because of it. You can just choose to trash one area though...

Whenever I’ve put fodder out loose, usually when I take pity on sheep in prolonged snow, I’ve ended up trying to scrape most of it back up again afterwards.

To be fair I've only used my unroller for cattle so far, and was very happy with it for them.
We'll see if I need to feed sheep witb it at all as winter progresses. Did wonder about getting a load of fodder beet

Cattle are certainly better for cleaning up off the floor ime, whereas sheep are stupid enough to stand on their food instead.

Fodder beet is good feed, but you’ve still got to get it out somehow. I’m loathe to take a loader in the field with it here, apart from on grass when it’s dried up a bit in March/April. I’d make a hell of a mess getting it out here currently, even if I could get back to the yard after. Suits some farms very well overwinter though.

Was planning on filling the bike trailer with fodder beet and tricking them out of that.

It’ll keep you busy. Half a ton doesn’t go far.

I have been racking my brains as to how to make a quad trailer that you could load with a bucket, then take to the field and trickle it out. I haven’t got anywhere though.

Don't see any problem loading the trailer with the bucket. Back up to the heap, tip beet in with overlap excess falling back into heap.
Various friends have 4' buckets on euros, which would be the other option.

Some sort of walking floor powered by the axle, with a pop-hole at the back?

Whole beet would meet at the hole though and bung up...
