Quality Equipment (G E Baker UK Limited)

Welcome to Quality Equipment
For 50 years Quality Equipment (QE), has been giving a personal, flexible service. This honest, straight-forward and bespoke approach is still at the very core of our work and service to pig farmers.

Quality Equipment, the equipment division of G E Baker UK Ltd, has progressed from providing everyday items of pig equipment – such as drinkers, feeders, gates, posts and farrowing crates – to complete construction projects from the ground up! This includes new buildings, refurbishment and conversion of existing buildings and fully kitting them out.

Quality Equipment prides itself on its comprehensive range of new and innovative products specifically designed to meet the on-going needs of modern pig farmers.

About Us

The roots of Quality Equipment go back to when its founder, Glyn Baker, left school at 15 years of age to start a five-year apprenticeship in Agricultural Engineering at Rycotewood College, Thame, Oxfordshire. He had already developed an interest in livestock, welding and blacksmithing on his father’s mixed farm in Suffolk.

When he returned home he became self-employed, firstly repairing machinery for local arable farmers and then manufacturing and mending items of equipment – such as farrowing crates – for pig producers, as well as carrying out general maintenance. This work soon spread across the whole of East Anglia and led to the formation of the award-winning Quality Equipment company we know today.

In 1971 the company attended its first Pig Fair held at Stoke Mandeville in Buckinghamshire. This opened up new markets in both the UK and internationally. The company has attended the specialist pig and poultry fairs ever since and continues to operate successfully in Europe and beyond.

During the rapid expansion and intensification of pig farming in the 1970s and 1980s, Quality Equipment expanded its service to include delivery of farming consumables and then larger items of equipment. A staff of 40 was employed and three liveried vehicles were on the road every day.

The company then invested in research and development and this resulted in the production of many innovative products, such as the much-acclaimed Transition Feeder which has been widely used around the world and saved the lives of thousands – if not millions – of piglets. QE continues to be actively involved in designing and developing equipment for modern, efficient pig production.

With the national emphasis focusing on energy-saving and the reduction of greenhouse gases QE is now involved in heat recovery and energy conservation in both its new and refurbished buildings.

In addition to its thriving equipment division, Quality Equipment has formed a separate construction department, now forming an important part of the company.

In 2005, Glyn Baker handed over the reins as managing director to Jamie Baker, though he still remains on the board. Jamie, supported by his fellow directors, Graham Baker and Mark Harding, is driving QE forward and continues to develop the product range and world-wide trading links of what is now a multi-faceted company.

With Japan as one of QE's major export successes with it's Transition Feeder, it made sense for our partner to embark on a the next step with the introduction of the piglet grower stage feeder with QE's Sprintomat.

The Sprintomat feeder is the new generation of wet feeder where feed is dispensed together with water at a variable ratio. New sensor technology ensures optimum feeding quantities by maintaining freshness and minimising feed wastage.

Newly weaned pigs achieve the best feed intake and growth performance when fed wet feed on a little and often basis, as when suckling with their mother. This early growth advantage continues throughout the growing phase.

  • Increased water intake during the critical phase immediately post weaning.
  • High Feed Intake with best FCR
  • Freshly mixed wet feed for minimum feed wastage
  • Suitable for all feeds
  • Easy to use and clean
  • For up to 45 pigs from wean to 35 kg
Features:

  • Timed feed cycle responsive to pigs feeding behaviour
  • Motor driven, variable feed delivery
  • Feed level in trough controlled by contactless sensor
  • Variable Feeding Intervals
  • Positional control panel for easy viewing
  • Swivel Hopper with safety lock for thorough cleaning
  • Removable control head for washing
  • Removable trough for cleaning
  • Universal low voltage plug in power supply unit
  • Removable feed delivery auger for cleaning
  • Swivel Hopper with safety lock for thorough cleaning

Midland Pig Producers appoints new distributor for award-winning pen

The creators of a pioneering farrowing pen, which is challenging conventional farrowing systems across the globe, have announced the appointment of a new distributor.

Staffordshire-based Midland Pig Producers (MPP) has signed up family-run firm Quality Equipment as official UK and Ireland distributor of its award-winning 360º Freedom FarrowerTM.

Quality Equipment, based in Woolpit, Suffolk, has a long-established reputation for supplying quality agricultural equipment across the UK as well as a successful track record of exporting products into the European and Asian markets. It is also actively involved in the design and development of equipment for modern, efficient pig production.

Jamie Baker, Quality Equipment Managing Director, said: "We are very pleased to be given the opportunity to collaborate with MPP to promote the 360° Freedom FarrowerTM as an alternative to the traditional farrowing crates. The team at MPP have taken their time to develop and refine the system so that it is now ready to introduce to a wider commercial market".

Andrew Atkin, MPP's project manager for the 360º Freedom FarrowerTM, said: "This is a significant step in MPP's journey to improve modern pig farming and help farmers across the world to raise their health and welfare standards without compromising productivity.

"Quality Equipment has an impressive reputation for delivering high quality products and we're delighted the firm can utilise its experience of the UK and global markets to develop the brand further and widen its following.

"Interest in the pen is growing and it's important that we work alongside a trusted and respected firm to enable us to deliver all the components of our farrowing system to future customers."

Designed by the MPP team, lead by Managing Director Martin Barker, the 360° Freedom FarrowerTM is the stand out alternative to traditional farrowing crates used by forward thinking producers across the UK.

The ground-breaking pen has the same footprint as a conventional crate, but improves the way in which the sow can be handled whilst allowing more freedom of movement. Its flexible design with moveable restraining bars give the animal space to turn around in the pen but also enables close containment when necessary.

MPP patented the design following extensive trials on its own farms and the product is now manufactured by independent family-owned firm IAE. The Stoke-based firm is the UK's leading manufacturer of livestock handling equipment, equestrian stabling, steel fencing and shelters.

Richard Harper, Sales Director at IAE, said: "We are pleased that MPP have selected IAE to manufacture the new 360° Freedom FarrowerTM and excited to be involved in this new venture."

Since launching its innovative farrowing unit, MPP has won a series of prestigious industry awards including a coveted Good Sow Commendation from Compassion in World Farming and the Food & Farming Industry Awards' prestigious Enterprise and Innovation title after demonstrating its commitment to advancing animal welfare standards and enhancing pig production techniques.

Agricultural businesses interested in acquiring a 360º Freedom FarrowerTM should contact MPP for more information via http://www.360farrower.com/
