Question about starting a dairy farm

Hello, I am interested in setting up a small dairy farm here in Mauritius and would like to know if 15 cows is a good heard size to start with? I have zero experience in the industry, but I will be seeking the services of a consultant for running the farm as well as counting on support of the ministry of agriculture department handling dairy activities. I will be hiring people to help since I can't do everything myself.

Thank you.

There are some reasonable sized dairy farms (over 200 cows) in Mauritius. The size of your herd will need to be based around the amount of land you have available, so this would be useful to know. A lot of people in Mauritius would feed a combination of grass and sugar cane byproducts; both of which you can feed fresh or ensile.
From what I understand of the industry in Mauritius, the price that you will get for fresh milk is fairly good, therefore 15-20 cows will make a viable system, but perhaps not so much if you employ multiple people - these are things that a consultant could help with as they will be most aware of input costs and milk price on the island.
