Hello!
I am thinking about direct drilling and getting a Weawing GD drill.
I have a few thoughts and questions about direct drilling.
I am not a fan of tillage especially because of the stones that my field have. Removing them from the field is difficult because of the workforce issues Latvia has.
I work part time elsewhere, and the job is my hobby and it gives also few holidays to relax (I work as a musician in an Orchestra).
Tillage is time consuming process and my farm needs almost most of the machinery bought new and bigger to keep up with the land we have. The machinery which we have now is sort of tired and breaks from time to time due to stones and other issues. So I am looking for ways to get the weawing drill to use it after in spring and autumn to drill wheat, buckwheat and maybe osr to the ground directly. I think that I could plough few fields each year to put the stubble and deaseases under, but I don't want to plough every field every year. I see other farmers do this and they loose a lot of carbon and moisture, which are very important components of todays farming. Also, I don't have any tractor driver in the farm. Just me and brother and I want to do drilling in the right time.
The reason I want to plough field once per crop rotation is also to keep the field level as we sometimes have issues with wet autumns and springs and the field gets uneven. I also have old subsoiler which I plan to use but I don't have a tractor for it. I also have cattle and I need to put slurry and much on the field and it needs tillage. Otherwise no point of putting it on the ground.
Another reason to keep away from tillage would be to keep the tractors around 150hp. I currently have three tractors in range from 100-125hp. And I want to use them for the drill and spraying etc until I can afford something bigger. I have also self made gps autosteer which gives me accurracy of 5cm.
Maybe my thoughts are not final but I think that they will crystalize through time.
What are your thought about this?
What do you practice in your farm?
Maybe I am thinking something wrong?
I want to hear opinions.
Thanks!
