Making a round bar fit in a square hole using

Length of nut branch, narrow one end very crudely with a bench grinder, thump it it through the head and then hammer in a lot of old fencing staples to swell and keep the head on. Might no be a bodge though as they seems to last longer than new handles do.Also whats best way to re shaft a hammer without useing new shafts waterpipe and broken bale spikes

Could be broken off if there was a casting flaw, but even so...It would be physically impossible to break that off , was it cut off , possibly to fit in available space ?
Hard enough to damage those old vices too.. Useful for rough work.
