I agree that they seem standard, but the 8.8 means a ultimate strength of 800MPa, with yield at 80% of this. To get this strength the material has to be hardened so they are high tensile.
I (and im open to correction here) always thought the std nyloc nut was 8.8 as you say, they can be sourced in 10 and 12 as well if you want high tensile nuts but they are heat treated to get to this, altho im sure plenty are chuffing them out at 4.8 in the far east...

(y) 25 ft lbs extra the second time 50 ft lbs the third! I wonder does it keep doubling till the inevitable fail?

When these were brand new I was on the sidelines watching them being paraded in front of the bigwigs on Salisbury Plain - big seated grandstand full of important people.......

As one came steaming past the vehicle commander was stood up in his hatch saluting the dignitaries when he realised that he was being overtaken by his own track.

They used to have old Abbot guns before the AS90 and everything was torqued to "FT" with a big bar, the AS90 is made of clever alloys and was issued with a torque wrench. The gun bunnies didn't bother with the torque wrench and tightened the road wheels to "FT" with the big bar........

Luckily the track didn't hit anything - unlike the driver who hit the brakes hard and shot off sideways.
