I would phone him ,record the call and say that you are sorry that you took his advice to go away, but would he like to reconsider as you can appreciate walking out like that may put him in a difficult position. A phone call costs nothing and it puts the ball in his court if he does play difficult on your final wages.
It is always a shame when things end that way, I must confess as an employer, I have a couple of times got upset in this situation , but like to think I have always gone back to apologise and hopefully we have parted. on good terms.

Fair play

Feck them... Lifes too short to be bowing down to f**kwits, especially an employer. He's probably known as being a cock anyway.

Did Similar after a shitty letter from a General Manager.... Wouldnt answer his phone so emailed him telling him to stick it up his arse, I'm off as of now. Never looked back...

id email then you have it in writting. Its also easier in an email to not get flustered. If in doubt. Speak to your local CAB.

Very sad to read, however we maybe only have half the story here. having a witness with you indicates something was wrong, and that you felt the need to have one due to what the expectation may be.

If he/she was angry enough to spark that reaction, it would be interesting to know why.
I more read the witness happened to be in ear shot and heard the discussion rather than he took a witness in with him ????

Turn your back on it and walk away with your head held up high .

I once worked for a dairy farmer in Newcastle Emlyn . He was sweetness and life when I went there but it soon changed. Very soon found out I was the 13th herdsman in 20 yrs .

I handed my notice in with a letter and stated that I was prepared to stay till he replaced me but he went berserk so I just walked away .
It happened just before milking on a Sunday eve and he had to milk them himself .

No point fighting them sorts they've ill never change . I hope you get sorted very soon .

If someone has had such a bad experience so recently they might not feel up to facing yet another explosive conversation via telephone only to repeat that experience.

If the OP has secured alternative employment already and does not require a reference, he is best off contacting them and letting them know what has happened and getting started in his new place earlier instead.

Not everyone relishes confrontation and I can't say I blame them.

Sorry , but a guy you have great hopes of , comes in Monday morning and announces he is leaving , come on you should be entitled to a rant. However you should then go back and apologise. I know I have done it.
he absolutely is not entitled to a rant, he has chosen to employ people and needs to understand people move on, good men never stay in a minor position long (however nice the kit) as they are always looking to better themselves.

There are 2 sides to every story, particularly when passions run high.
I'd be slow to offer too much of an opinion unless I knew at least one of those involved pretty well.

All that we as strangers can really do is offer advice on holidays, notice period and outstanding wages etc.

Anyone directing a lot of vitriol/verbal abuse and profanity at another person in the workplace is out of order- lets get that clear. Everyone has had a dressing down from someone somewhere in life, I'm not denying this or suggesting it is wrong, but to be verbally abusive is just wrong and it won't fly very far in most workplaces today. I have experienced a lot of things but I certainly would not stand by and watch another employee suffer that and I wouldn't care about the status of the offender, either.

Two sides there may well have been, but no one deserves to be treated that way- those times are gone.
