You have no problem,he can't force you to work your notice, and he can't withhold money owed to you. You may technically be in breach of contract, but he could only dismiss you, but he would still owe you for the hours already done. You don't want to work there anyway.
You may have a battle to get the money but it is yours.

Correct. Contractually you are meant to work your notice period, but in reality there is virtually nothing an employer can do to force you to work it or seek damages.

Water under the bridge now, but others read these threads, so....

In similar circumstances, I'd write a polite factual email stating the position. A wise man once told me, "Never put into writing anything you wouldn't be happy to read out in court".

Next, I would try to research his previous employees in case you need evidence and witnesses of his unreasonable behaviour in the past.

I have to admit to having walked off a few jobs in my time. In the past, it wasn't difficult to walk out of one job and into another in a matter of hours! But it doesn't look good on the cv even if it was justified -- and witnessed with tangible evidence. Folk generally avoid trouble if they have a choice.

I must have some part of my brain un-plugged or something but I wouldn't be emailing an employer who had just literally told me to F off in his closing remarks? He has clearly indicated what he wanted you to do, and any sane man would have left the premises in short order in a cloud of dust. What further obligation do you have to the man? Explain it to me?

Bang on!! I wouldn't be raking it over either. Onwards and Upwards.

An Employer employs you they don't own you... I'd have asked why an employee was leaving and if I wanted them to stay I'd make every effort to see what could be done.

If they were determined to leave then best of luck and wish them well.
