Rafter size

One of my customers wants me to put up a pole barn for him, he has the poles, going to be 20’x45’ with box profile roof.
What size rafter should we be using?

We used 6"x3" in this one, about 5 foot apart and 18' bays. Local chap cut them out of larch for me.
Rafters 7x3.5

I'd use triple 8x2 spiked together be safe enough with that

I was thinking more along the lines of a 12/14 x 4.
Didn’t know if anyone had used something similar?

i have to drill holes in wooden purlins for 16mm bolts.
i only have a 19mm drill, will that be ok?

that would be overkill in my experience

price up a steel building, factor in the ease of construction and the fact its a lot better job!
the purlins and roof sheets will be over 50% of the total cost, the steel frame will be roughly £1200? I reckon you wont regret doing it properly with ce marked shed etc

I agree with this. We only put up our pole shed because I'd had the poles for nowt at that time and it's only for machinery. If it was for livestock, I wouldn't entertain anything other than steel and concrete fibre roof.

Agreed to, but customer has all the poles, and it’s just for a few bits of Machinery to, with just a cheap hardcore floor.

I just had a steel frame made £2850 for 23ft x 60ft. 20ft bays. That was just for the frame, purlins and sheets still to source.

/\ I think that would work out cheaper than timber for definite, it takes a lot of time notching in the timbers and lakeing about.
