Railway crossings

That's the only one that seems to come up on the maps, an aquaintence of mine says that it's a staggered crossing, you have to drive a short distance on or near the track to cross them.

I take it the phone didn't work or clearance shouldn't have been given? I know there are rumours of a breakdown but surely time to call the operator should be allowed for.

I think the phone is no longer there, I don't know the reason why but it appears that apart from farm access, it's generally foot traffic.

It could be the old boy knew better and didn't want to bother anyone.

Well if that sign is anything to go by then H&S should be all over it. Have to open the far side before you drive through. Can just imagine driving through the first gate then coming to 2nd gate with insufficient space for vehicle to clear the tracks. Jump out open gate and train hits vehicle. For the sake of moving the gate 10 yards further away from the track it seems stupid.

Looks like the other side looking back. Perhaps the phone is only on one side, but that is just pure speculation as I've never been across that crossing.

Looked at bit closer at our pictures and you can see they're both different gates so something is amiss.

Facts:
the pictures are of the same crossing from different sides in different years.

the phone is still there.

the poor chap ( a local beef farmer) used the crossing daily, and had his own key to gates, did not use phone. approaching up hill it is ok and you can see. approaching downhill the view is really bad and you have to nudge your way put to be able to see.

there is an alarm that has been in place a couple of years when a train is approaching but is temperamental at best.

hope that clears a few things up, it is very very sad and answers will be found I'm sure. the crossing needs closing and has for years.

...... Surely a light - but then if that was faulty? I am really astounded that this can happen.
A light isn't that bad an idea. Our poultry sheds have lights wired into the alarm circuits (2 bulbs in each fitting to allow for a blown bulb), light on- no fault, light off- fault, this is to identify which shed has the problem when the alarm is sounding. Surely a similar sort of setup as used for automatic barrier crossings could be used to trigger a light at these types of crossing. Light on meaning line clear, proceed with caution. Light off, train approaching.
