Ram ripped his horn off

My ram has ripped his horn off. It’s come away clean from the base, exposing the bone. Had the vet out who cleaned and treated with an antiseptic wound spray. They said no good bandaging and to apply this spray for the next 10 days.
They also said about a spot on treatment to keep flies away and said it was called Spot On. When I’ve looked at this it says it treats established flystrike on sheep, it doesn’t say about preventing it, although it does mention use to control flies on cattle so I assume this works the same. A single dose in one spot between the shoulder blades. Has anyone used this product for this purpose? Vet says he needs something as don’t want flies getting into it.
In addition he’s due to be shorn in a couple of weeks. The vet said this product shouldn’t be an issue as it goes to the skin rather than the fleece.
Any advice welcome please. Can’t believe he’s done this to himself :(

Could you Shear him and his mates now?
Let them run in over night for ten days or so as its bit cold, then you can spray him as well.
And then just put a bit of crovect on him .

edit. a generic of crovect such as moleecto from mole valley farmers etc is the best value way of buying it.

Crovect applied locally (on his head) would be my approach. Spot on applied to the shoulder is too far from the target area for my mind . Is his fleece going to be high value? If not you could just bin (burn?) it if you are not comfortable putting it in the wool sheet. We use Crovect a lot on tup heads and it`s a good product for the job (Swaledales). I don`t think Spot On on the shoulder will keep flies away from his head anyway as it seems odourless to me -good for tick control mind!!

No I’m not thinking there’ll be much value to the fleece and not too worried if there were - just want his head fixed!!
Someone I know has said they’ve used a very weak Jeyes fluid and water solution to keep flies off??

Jeyes is best left to cleaning the greenhouse, nowadays. It was once used for animal work, but phenolic acid isn't pleasant, and is dangerous to cats.

The spray recommended by the vet, and consider Stockholm tar, should be OK. Bad enough when a ram knocks a horn off; worse when a cow does.

Thanks all. Picked up some Crovect and have dabbed that round and will keep an eye on him. Will keep him close to home and hopefully it’ll all heal up pronto. Didn’t even know this could happen. Saw red on his head and thought he’d just cut or caught himself, then saw the bloody horn on the floor! Now to wait and see if anything grows back...
