But it is a code, a guide as to rights and responsibilities. It can be used as a reference, but is not statutory.

You don’t need to ask permission to camp overnight on someone’s land, or to go wandering through a standing crop. It is only expected that you abide by the code when you do so.
True but:
The Code has been approved by both the Scottish Government and the Scottish Parliament. It is expected to provide sufficient guidance to ensure that most access problems can be resolved by reference to it. Failure to comply with the Code is not, in of itself, an offence, however where a dispute cannot be resolved and is referred to the courts for determination, the sheriff will consider whether the guidance in the Code has been disregarded by any of the parties.

So disregard it at your own peril.

The right to roam....

Just a few weeks back I left the house to pick up my boy from school to find two morons loitering at my shed door, about 5 yards from the door of my house, when challenged one said 'we've just walked off the hill' and then I guess they sensed my mood and the pair of them ran away down my driveway at speed, as I was going out anyway I obviously caught up with them and questioned them as to what they'd been stealing. Turns out they were just out exercising their right to roam and although they had thousands of acres of open hill to choose from, they'd decided that my garden was the place to be.

Funnily enough, although they felt entitled to spend time in my garden at my house, they refused to tell me their names or tell me where they were from, so I won't be able to enjoy their gardens.... Anyway, after a search through their rucksack I satisfied myself that they hadn't stolen anything from me and advised them as to how to leave my property. I don't think they'll come back... and my wife who was watching out of the window found the whole spectacle very amusing.

As for the purple lines on the map, the ones marked round here include private roads leading to houses, and some random lines that start nowhere and lead nowhere in places I've never seen a soul walking. Looks to me like they've just traced over anything that resembles a line on a satellite image.
