Ransomes skimmers question

I'm lucky enough to have a Ransome TS78 which has been in the family for as long as I have and I'm looking to re-metal it and get it doing a bit again.

It was ploughed until it was worn out in the early 80's and has stood undercover since. The mouldboards and shins are easy enough to find but I'm looking for skimmers now.

There seem to be 2 versions.

I've still to check which the plough had originally as it is in another shed, but what would be the different jobs for these skimmer types?

I've managed to scrape together a full set of each, along with some spare legs etc thanks to a nice man.
If anyone wants parts he's got a few boxes full.

Thanks for any info.

Not meaning to piddle on you're bonfire, but if those are tcn boards, which they look like to me, then they won't be easily found if you want genuine ones, and if you do they will set u back a pretty penny.

Even spurious copies will be £100+

I bet It would be a cracking outfit to see working.

I've had to compromise and get ucn boards already. :(
I might yet polish up the existing boards, they're worn to a feather edge but are original.
I'm not keen on putting an extra £500 into it for high days and holidays, but could get there eventually.

I can`t tell by the shape of the boards because they are so badly worn. I can see that this is a labour of love and the final outfit will not be for match ploughing. The cheapest option is to rebuild with SCN I would have thought. The skimmer parts should be plentiful.

Look like very hard worn TCN's to me Nearly. Will still plough once shined even like that if you put new shins on, although might not be too good for the fancy bits with as much gone off the bottom of them. Will look different again with new shins and points on. SCN/UCN points will fit although the hole pitch is wider on a UCN wing. Points are a tenner apiece from Westlake. Easy enough to check what the bodies are by the number on the back of the board. Should be TCN3K and also say Kristeel. Some of the later ones may have a number starting with a PB prefix and have the styleised Ransomes 'R' on them.
Engine transplant on the Super as well as? Ploughed thousands of acres with a similar combination but with YL boards on.

When it comes out of the shed and I have my glasses with me I might have a chance. This plough lived out for most of its life so not a lot left at front or back of boards.
Thanks for location info.

Having done some measuring of the frog and share, I'm saying these are TCN's. I might use the UCN's that I have on my DP7.

Kongskilde had some spurious boards made a few years ago. Whilst they are not particularly good for competition work, they might be ok for what you need and significantly less than the £350 apiece that genuine boards fetch - that's if you can find them.

I think Neilo had a picture very like that plough? I'm not sure what the difference in the skimmers is. My guess is one type is for stubbles and the other for lea. In my experience the round skimmer stalks are better as they can be adjusted sideways as the skimmer points wear, whereas the flat ones can only be adjusted up and down and along the beam. They were hard to hold in position along the beam. I'm not sure how old your plough is, my guess would be 1960's.
The board markings are right behind the support bar, pretty much in the middle of the board, try using a small wire brush.

The plough is a TS78 which was originally offered in 1961 with YL, Epic, DMD-BP and FRDCP bodies. With TCNs it would be 1964 or later. Ransomes only made two semi mounted models, this one and the TS88 which had a different frame type unless I am mistaken.
