It's secret :stop: I would write a reply but you are not worth it

Hi i also found by making longer adjustment for the skims and moving forward helps in the appearance of the furrows but i was interested to know if you put the discs on positive or neg cut as well i also suffer from not being firm enough and have pushed the boards in perhaps i should try to lessen the push a little mike

Yeah Sure is ! We started the match about 7 years ago to try and encourage Young farmers into match ploughing in Caithness ! Its done wonders for the Caithness Ploughing scene with about 60% off the matches being made up of under 30's now. We had 5 ladies ploughing all of which were novices and we help them throughout the day to encourage them and keep them right while ploughing ourselves we always have one of us following them between ploughing our own plot. :)
Didn't get to match myself due to working ,the ploughing is fairly getting popular up here now,was only a few dedicated chaps left at one point, not ploughed myself for few years due to certain chaps spoiling it but might take myself and o!d plough out of retirement and have another go.

what Socks to you's use for Match ploughing with YL 183's ?

Cheers
YL44 or YL61. I prefer 61s because they are thinner but obviously wear quicker though they are otherwise the same shape. I cut the wing off to give an overall width of about 6.5". For opening, and on the rear for finishing I often use slightly narrowed YL50s.

Cheers I have been constantly trimming my YL44's but find it is breaking the furr and not leaving a shine on the work very loose and loosing mega points on firmness and packing. Will have to try and track down some YL61's.

Very interesting I have been having the same problem with 8 inch shares on 11 inch work. The front furrow breaking up as it passes onto the board. Have tried raising the discs and moving them forward and skimming only the minimum needed.
I think I too will try narrower shares

Should wet or dry Conditions affect the choice of share?

Why are you ploughing 11" with YLs when 10" is the norm ? The main reason for cutting narrower is so that you leave a hinge to aid inversion of the slice without pushing it sideways. There is obviously more of a tendency to push side ways in hard or heavy soils.

Ha ha good question and interested to hear opinions.
I have modified a Ts59 and found that to get the Plough pulling square I need the front leg outside the frame. That means the only standard width is 12 inch but that was too wide so I spacered the rear leg out to just under 11 inches. It won't go narrower as no more space at the back inside of the frame.

I can't think of another way. Maybe put front leg back inside and change wheel settings?

I get it. You need the rear wheels at 52" centres and the fronts at 48", assuming 6" front tyres and 11" rears.. This should give 40-42" between the tyres front and back. You can then run the front and rear legs inside the frame and plough 10" furrows.

Thanks. I will have to check the wheels settings. I think they are about 54 the back and fronts the same. Rear tres either 11 or 12 inch will have to check. on a dexta.
Have been debating bringing fronts in to run against furrow wall anyway.

Both front and back should run against the furrow wall as near as is possible. I think you will find that you have to bring the fronts in as far as possible.
