Re-engining a JCB 535 - 95

Probably a dumb question but ....... I have JCB 535 with what is probably an injection pump issue (low power especially when cold). It's a 1999 and the non turbo version for the Perkins phaser engine (supposed 90hp), so has always been quite under powered and slow in an 8 1/2 ton machine. I also have a 2003 Renault Premium 18t flatbed that needs a new bed and some tidying .... I've looked a selling it but we are based in Normandy, France the truck is a UK right hand drive, so I'll only get scrap money for it (about £1k). The truck has a 210 hp Renault engine & has only cover about 160 thousand miles, so is in good condition. We run several Renault HGV's ( including another very similar 2005 with 270 hp) and they are just as reliable (if not better) than any others. Additionally, here in France the parts are cheap. ........... So ........ would it be a good idea to re-engine the JCB with the engine from the Renault? ......... if so what would be the technical issues?

Think you 'd have to change the torque converter, to match the engine power. As there is usually a different part number between turbo and none turbo engines. That would probably be the least of the challenges of repowering the telehandler.

Would be a lot easier to find a turbo’d version of the Perkins from the same engine series and approximate age, surely. At least all the ancillary parts will swap over, and the only additional parts would be the intercooler assembly which will probably have been fitted to the ag spec 535 originally.
I assume yours is an industrial spec machine?

Yes it's industrial spec. Yep I'm sure you are right, just seems daft to have a perfectly good engine sitting here & worth nothing.

Quite simply No. Not worth the hassle.

Will burn out transmission
Flexi coupling wont take the power and neither will torque converter or 90 deg transfer gearbox.

Also will rev too high so need to be cut back and I suspect engine be too long.

Perkins engine are easy to find and cheap to rebuild. You can get a turbo spec version of what you have that's 101hp will be a straight swap other than exhaust. 120hp will require different cooling packs and things and not be so easy or cheap to do and also not really needed on that spec machine as it still wont make it an agri spec?‍♂️

If I were you, rebuild the Perkins and add a passive turbo. Some had a kit you could buy and not change any thing. It would give 15hp is so give you a bit more power.

What else is different on the Agri Spec machines? Obviously the more powerful engine ..... a different torque converter?

Depends on the overall agri spec IMO, several different control and pump variations depending on age etc different spool blocks, 120hp machines will have a different torque converter and at the time a 5 speed powershift with torque lock, later machines will have the 6 speed powershift with torque lock. Limited slip diffs, Intercooler and hydraulic coolers, aircon, boom suspension etc etc

Thank you ...very sound advice!!

I have looked up the engine code and discovered that the Perkins in the 535 is only 72 hp (I had previously assumed 90 hp) to start with, even when it was new..... no wonder it's gutless!! If I swap it out for a 101hp turbo phaser will it be the same torque converter?
