Re Hunting

Following on from the hunting thread above it is almost impossible to find any hunter hirelings (horses on self drive hire) in the west Midlands and north Wales If there is any members on here who can deal with horsey types I have been quoted £300 a day for a hireling with 60% up front in cash no return deposit.I can name 10 hunts who are unable to supply horses, the whole market is there for the taking for a decent hireling business. No idea about insurance etc .

A lot of these are by word of mouth - too many yards who did hirelings for any Tom, Dick or Rupert had them abused & lamed by the poor nags being run into the ground.

All the hirelings I have had have been by personal recommendation only. That was in Belvoir, Blankney, Tedworth, Wilton & Beaufort hunts.

Yes, thats why the personal recommendation thing has to work both ways though, isn't it? A half decent tool to cross the Belvoir or Beaufort countries wouldn't be the sort of thing I'd be up for hiring to anyone unless I was confident as to the hirer's ability , not to mention their common sense!
As to the OP, why would anyone want to pay £300/day for a horse to hunt in the areas mentioned, nowadays?

I'd agree with both the above posts. There's no way I'd loan or hire even the poorest horse to anyone without recommendation from someone who knew the enquirer well and could pass on that he/she was kind, considerate and gentle towards the animal and its wellbeing. First and foremost care is to the horse. I have seen poor treatment by so called 'experienced' riders and certainly would never lend a horse to someone with that attitude.

Had some amusement close to you a few years ago when A.S took up riding at 50 odd, was like watching a hessian sack strapped on board, he thought post was something that arrived in a red van.

Ha! My old boss in Lincs only took up hunting when the Hunting With Dogs Act was first forced through Parliament. Couldn't ride at all & still can't but never let that stop him at all. Fair play to him! He started on hirelings then eventually bought his own nag.
