Re-mapping

Depends who is doing it - avoid the back street chap with a laptop and cheap programme who just turns up the boost to unacceptable levels and dumps loads of fuel in the cylinders = goosed engine

Has anyone re-mapped a tractor?is it worth it and do you find much difference?
Yes it makes hell of a difference but I really think it needs a dyno as my 120hp at PTO was remapped to what I had asked for as 140 HP PTO but when dealer dyno'd it afterwards I had a fair bollocking from them as I'd got 175hp at PTO and drinks fuel at twice the rate it did.

Yes the factory payload will install over the remap but usually the tuner will re-install the tuned payload for free... But best check. Im my opinion... Software issues rarely ever happen so from a tech point of view re-installing the factory payload never fixes anything. Unless the fault is a failing ecu.

We decided on a chip for that reason, had tractors with dodgy ECU's in the past and steinbauer have a good name about themselves

Ive seen a few boxes cause ecu failures tho the manufacturer says its not possible. I can think of one that brought up an ecu error code.. and another that caused 2 x ecu failures.

Also the egr operation works from ecu inj duty cycle.. vgt position so with a box... if the egr is still operational it wont be working correctly... not ideal.

The biggest failure with the box solution is that you lose the "safety cap" built into the original map and sensor feedback control loop. Basically the ECU has no real control any longer and safeguards the engineers have built into the ECU operation are sidestepped.

The cost of engines, turbos, injectors, indeed ECUs alone these days would terrify me into not using a box unless there was a cast iron guarantee from the chip/box maker.

No worries if things are going great, but terrible when they go pear shaped.

A proper remap by a decent tuner is way better than a box which is just a bodge imho.

An engine of a very close relative lunched on its own turbo due to a dodgy remap - cost £12k for new engine, turbo and ancillaries

yes remapped mine due to lack of power and poor lugging not realy looking for more just trying to get what should of been there ..
would i do it again maybe ..read as i would not buy smaller and try and screw it out to a bigger size but would use it to improve motor
seen some intresting dyno read outs of other brands some are better than others depending on work and main use IE pto work or low down lugging
