Now we learn why pre-cast concrete products come across the water for less than we can make them. The main culprit is our government with their environmental controls, from planning applications through aggregate taxes and extraction controls to fuel used; and people wonder why the Westminster village gets a kicking!

Probably true to a certain extent but quarries here operate under similar rules. One of the main reasons is that we have a better supply of good quality aggregate and in general companies here accept a lower profit margin.

If I were buying any amount of premix in England I would be spec'ing 50% ggbs along with 50% Portland.

Cement is 2.99 per bag here in sunny Essex if you buy 9 tonnes at once, my head man had a day off, the cement (which he didn't know I had ordered) was delivered that day.

I told him not to look in that shed, he still did, now wants a holiday for some reason.

Didn't tell him that we would need another 6 tonnes to finish the job either, I think I will leave that till he has calmed down a bit.

I got 3 tonnes for £2.68/bag in March, last year got 28 tonnes for £2.19/bag delivered to west Suffolk. Southern Cement at Felixstowe, both through a buying group. I paid £15.75/t for aggregate though :(

That's a big bit of concrete, are you building a runway? I worried about some of the quality that I got when not on named brands, what brand was this cheap stuff?

Aggregate is a bit pricey round here, cheaper if you go and get it of course but then all sorts of hassle with weighbridge, sheeting loads, permits and of course punctures if you wander in with a tractor and trailer.

It was Southern Cements own brand, it seemed good stuff. We laid a sugarbeet pad, and various other smaller bits, once you get a mixer you find all sorts of bits to do, was a pretty good workout!

I love reading all the 'cheap concrete' posts. Me, I buy in 3.0 metre loads from mini-mix co and do that each day if I'm on my own. Gone are the days when I could load a mixer, using up an eight cubic yard heap, and lay it too! Unfortunately due to the monopolies rules Larfage have discontinued the availability of their 'flowing concrete' in this part of the world as this enabled me to lay 6.0 m3 in a morning.
