Realistic working speeds

Hi all, me again!

Briefly: I'm just a lowly IT worker who enjoys playing Farm Sim as this is the closest I can get to real farming. I also recognise the lack of realism of the game in a lot of parts, and being the nerd-type, I want to change this. The game allows me to run a baler at 20km/h without ever clogging up, I can windrow at 18km/h etc etc. In the spirit of doing things a little more realistically, I'm hoping a few of you will be able to give me some very ballpark figures on speeds you actually run at on your farms. It can be very simple, for example:

Baling: 9-12km/h
Planting: 6-10km/h

Or if you wanted to be a little more specific, you could say:

Baling hay: 9-12km/h, straw 6-9km/h
Cultivating (discing): 6-10km/h, (ripping) 4-8km/h

I'm very grateful for any responses on this. Remember the game doesn't distinguish fields types, mud, volume of straw/grass/hay etc etc, so a ballpark range is absolutely fine, but I'm always interested in the finer detail if you want to give it.

Thanks, all! :) (y)

Forward speed varies on so many levels. Great question to ask and nice to see you taking an interest in agriculture!.
Bailing. Anywhere from 4 to 22kph. Small conventional bales and round tend to be sub 10kph. Big heston type bales, as fast as the tractor will go. So 20KPH is possible.
Culivatating, again massvie varition. Some machine are designed to work at a min speed of say 12kph. Some at a max speed.
Planting, best ive done was 25kph in Austraila with a trailed direct tine drill. In uk speeds vary from 2-8kph for mounted combination type drills (Sulky Progress) to 8-18kph for trailed drills...
Sorry cant be more helpful but please , others, due contribute

Whenever I asked how fast to go when rolling, harrowing etc I was always told as fast as a shire horse can walk because that is what the roll, harrow etc was built for.
I wonder what they would make of people asking how fast to go while pretending to be a farmer on a computer. It is a strange world and I'm not sure I am keeping up.

When we were farming which was on a small scale.... using twose water filled roller the slower the better, third gear on power major at fast tick over similar using small baler

I mean, the games are going to be one of, if not the, biggest engagement of younger people into farming, outside of it being passed down the family tree. I'd hope they would be well on-board with ensuring people stay in farming (y)

Thanks for answers @Robt certainly seems like huge variables, though the speeds are faster than I was expecting!

Don’t knock it. I play with the kids sometimes it’s good fun and educational for the kids plus it keeps them off fortnight which is a load of rubbish and rots their minds

You crack on @curiousnonfarmer don't mind me. Sounds like you have better kit than me anyway.

I'd love to actually own this Fendt 939 I'm in right now but virtual is the best I can do. I want the knowledge from all of you on here that do it for a living; I've a reasonable interest in agriculture so reading all the topics on here and playing Farm Sim lets me live your lives vicariously (and probably with a bit less stress too - nothing breaks, even when you slam the combine's pipe into the shed accidentally!).

them speeds you quote dont seem to daft, infact i would imagine realistic.

Its an impressive game, the detail within it it now unbelievable and some of the maps are amazing, particularly like the ones based on google earth images or a 'real' place, i believe the one im referring to is 'oakfield'

Yep, "Oakfield Farm" is one of the "real" places modified slightly to fit in game. I've sunk a couple of hundred hours into that one, I'm not-too-afraid to admit.

With Farm Sim it's very easy to get carried away getting the big equipment with massive horsepower, leave your foot flat to the floor when mowing etc, but it seems a good portion of UK farms will all be around 150hp tractors, using drills, windrowers that are all in the 3-4m kind of size, so I'm personally just trying to get the realism down from that side (as well as what speed to run things at, hence this topic). I want to do that to get a better understanding of how busy real-life farmers actually are, and even how slow and dull some of the work may be :geek: (y)
