So mystery solved (I think!) turns out the calf appears to be one of a set of twins....

The next weird thing? Third set of twins on the trot!? Never had twins in the herd before, and suddenly, bang - 3 sets in a row!! The annoying thing is the last 2 sets have been a bull and a heifer:rolleyes: what's the chances of the heifers not being freemartins 😒😒

I'm also trying to remember what the heck I did differently with herd management last year 😅
We bought some dairy blues and were told one was twin to a bull. When in the fat yard noticed she kept coming on stock so when vet on farm asked her to check her out. Said she was fine to breed and is now on her sixth calf and is one of best cows in the herd.

However on the other hand we have had singles that won't breed and assume it was a twin but cow lost one.

I'm now trying to work out where in North Suffolk you reside 👀

If they’ve not been in the same sack then will be fertile but 9 times out of 10 they’re not

What difference would it make that they aren't the same colour? Can they be in the same sack but turn out completely different? Showing my ignorance here.

We have a twin to a bull who calved this year. When she was born the mother had 2 placentas. The vet also took a look at her as a new born and was able to fully insert a blood tube into her vagina.

Colour has nothing to do with it identical twins doesn’t happen supposedly in cattle as that’s one egg split in two not two separate eggs

I’m not 100% sure but cows and sheep release more than 1 egg usually for it to be twins rather than the egg splitting and having the exact same gene make up. Just depends on wether they were in separate placentas and I’m not sure what influences that.
