Really random question...

Hello,
Random question that I hope someone will know the answer to...
Last month I went around our field with the dogs and found around 10 sticks - randomly hammered into the ground about a foot. Took a while to pull them out, but again today I have found at least a dozen sticks - again really hammered into the ground.
Pulled them all out - eventually!
Does anyone know why this would be done?
I've put a sign up at the gate saying no tresspassing, but I'm sure that doesn't bother the weirdo that is doing this.
All advice greatfully received. Thanks in advance.
