Rear discharge spreader gear boxes

I think the bearings have gone in one of the gearboxes in our bunning spreader. Either that or the coupling to the auger/rotor is knackered. It still turns but there is hellish backlash and play in there and it wobbles all over the place. It's the older type with 3 gearboxes. I've priced a new one at £560 :eek:but would rather not pay that. Has anybody anybody replaced one of these before? Just wondering if you unbolt the top and lift the augers out or unbolt the bottom and drop the gearboxes down.

And has anyone replaced bearings/seals in them or know where I can find a second hand gearbox for one?
Any help much appreciated

Lift the two beaters up off the gearboxes , then you will be able to see what play is in the shafts sticking up . I have my k2 apart at the minute because two gears lost teeth , a new box is €2500.

Just make a few marks on the rotors and a load of photos so you know where they line up to when you reassemble them. Getting the timing right is not that hard but you only have to be a little out to make a big mess of things.

Think you will find out what is wrong by dropping the oil out of the box.
It could be the rubber couplings or the hex shaft that passers thought the gear box has cracked or the duplex chain is very worn.
The gearboxes are a lot of money, after having had two gearboxes fail, I dropped all three out and replace them with a single gearbox for the price of two originals.

Looking a bit different now. Unfortunately it is the gearbox bearings though I think the rubber wedges need replacing as well. There's a couple of chain joiners between the gearboxes so timing them back shouldn't be a problem.

Next questions. Are the triangular bits part of the gearbox shaft or has the muck welded them on and how do I strip the gearboxes down?

The coupling comes off the shaft, it is not held on by anything only rust.
Their is a a cur clip behind the oil seals, then pushing the shaft out. The job is a bit of a fiddle.
Have you had the plate off the bottom yet?
Dropped the plate off one box and found the edge had come off the teeth.
Refitting the rubbers can be a pain, I have had to use a loading shovel to push the drive coupling in back in to the auger, lots of Fairy Liquid .

They are just COMO gearboxes. I did one on my Bunning this summer. £180 from Krampe. Mine came with the shaft sticking out the wrong side but it was just a matter of taking it to bits and reversing the output shaft.
Fitting the new rubber segments was the worst bit, absolute pain when you are on your own.

Como:D. I take it that's short for comosexual. What a nightmare. I got the hex shafts out, just. The triangle hub things won't come off at all. I've wedged it between pallet tines and smacked the casing with a big bar but they won't budge an inch. I drained the oil from one and got the bearings out of the sleeve shaft but that wont come out with the other gear behind. took the circlip off holding the splined gear on but that shaft won't come out either and everything is covered in oil/grease now:(

Think we'll have to get the wallet out. Are these the gearboxes then? Can you buy directly off kramp?

Thats them. You have to check the correct input/output gear ratios for your machine. Don't think Krampe sell direct, you have to go through a dealer/agent. Got mine from Rickerby ltd.

Definitely 1:1 on ours. I smashed the casing on this one in a fit of rage:mad:. The real annoying thing is the gears are perfect and there's plenty of oil in the box (well an emulsion of oil and muck). Just the 2 smaller bearings closely spaced that take all the brunt from the rotors that have gone. Poor gearbox design/selection I think.
Going to try rickerbys tomorrow to see what price can do for us for all the bits. We bought the spreader from them second hand anyhow.

Should be a plate on the box saying its serial number to make things easy to i identify it.
If the truth be told I would think the box is not designed to run with the output vertical, but horizontally. I dont think the top bearings get to much oil.that way up.
