Recovering data

I have this pc for my pig feed station and now it stopped working. Keeps the fan running on full tilt and shots off eventually. No problem, I'll buy another cheapie on the nets (the system runs of it's own dedicated computer, this is only for easier access).
Anyhow, I did have a small file with some information on tags on it which I would like to retrieve. I have no knowledge whatsoever on this but I like to be able to do it, well, how is it done?
Thanks in advance

How did you get the HDD out with 'no knowledge'? :)

As above, get one of these

Connect it to any PC by USB, open Windows Explorer (press windows key and E together) find the required file and put it wherever you wish.

10 years out of that Seagate drive isn’t too shabby really.

Just be slightly careful with the SATA to USB adapter cable you get off the fleabay. The one you linked to isn’t suitable for “desktop” (that is 3.5 inch) drives like the OPs, only the smaller form factor “laptop” (2.5 inch) drives.

Ah thanks for that. I just ordered..... a 2.5 inch. Crap.
I ordered another one for both 2.5 and 3.5.
Now I know this I can finally recover the files on my old laptop that crapped out almost 10 years ago.

So plug it all in any wait a moment for windows to recognise the drive.. Go into Explorer, click on the drive. You may get Permission notifications but just press cancel.. then navigate your way to the files you want , copy & paste them back to your local drive.

Any recommendations what to do if the drive isn’t recognised? I believe I have a safe backup of my data but it would be worth a look.

If the base OS fails to recognise the drive, you may need to go to a “lower level” utility that can make sense of what is happening at the “block” level rather than at the file / directory level. Depending on not on what has borked it or been corrupted.

It’s been a long while since I’ve played with such utilities, so I can’t give you recommendations on where to look unfortunately.

Take out your hard drive and plug it into another working computer to see if the file can be found.Or scan your computer for recovering the file, choose one of them.
