Morning All,

Our main operator / farm manager has left, a little more suddern than we expected, but it was always talked about.

we now have the task of recruiting, we feel its a good all round job with a decent 4 bed house but looking out there, lots of jobs being advertise but very few wanting - certainly goign to be hard to find someone.

where does one start to advertise?

Facebook feels too unspecific
Not sure the farm manager / operator we need reads the FW?
Farmers Guradian perhaps?
any recrutiment companies?

not sure i can stomach poaching someone of a neighbourin farmer - all though if they are unhappy / want to move up a gear then perhaps its not too awful.

any advice welcome, easy on the horror storries please!

Do you have other younger workers that could be up to the task? Other than that I think you’ll be poaching others head tractor driver/foreman from your neighbors. If I was in the position of needing a manager I think I’d prefer a lesser qualified but known to be hard working and honest local than somebody completely un known

Sort of farm ?

Having a bit of a change around, looking for one man that can do it all, weekly meetings but left to get on with it sort of thing. need old enough for experinace but young enough to want to 'make the place their own' as it where.

I know - big ask...

Start with a realistic job description, setting out the role. Then think about the calibre of person you would like to fill that role. Then think about the package you will need to attract that person...

I saw a job advert his morning for an arable foreman on 1300ha, with responsibilities including Gatekeeper and all RT/FA recordkeeping, overseeing harvest operations, leadership & labour management.

To me that isn't a foreman's role, it's a management position. If there is already a manager (probably tied up with non-agri diversifications e.g lettings/sporting/forestry/AD/renewables) then he needs an assistant or a deputy.

Or restructure and clarify the roles, with a farm director looking after property and diversifications, overseeing a farm manager who looks after the actual farming.

@confusedsibling . Back in 2001 i was very lucky enough to be given the role of trainee manager on a 400 ha mixed farm. I was interivewd by owner and management company at the time with a view to take over and remove management company in 4 years.
What made the role attractive to me was i didnt have a degree only 10 years of hard work working alongside my father evenings and weekends and 3 summer student roles. I liked the house as it would be my first house away from parents. I loved the overtime and loved farming.
What was less attractive for the new boss was i was an unknown, I was a risk. I was on a temp 6 months contract so could be replaced at any time.
I really do wihs you all the best as there are some excellent lads and lasses out their that just need a chance.
If i were you id advertise as previously said on every platform going. Dont reply to comments on social media, Only accept pm's. Let them call you not messages asking you to call them (i hate this!)
Social media is where you will find your next manager. It may cost you 4-5k to do this but the right person could easily earn you that money back in the first six months!
Not sure where you are as your avatar says gods country which could be any county!
Kind regards

I’ll echo some of the above comments, get a smart advert onto here, FB, insta, LinkedIn etc
I’d also get it on FWi too ( it’s where I saw my role )

Clear concise advert with a good picture, cut the waffle
