Red clover and docks

New field of red clover with more docks than anything else. Can anything be used that won't kill the clover? Squire herbicide says it is safe on white clover but not red, has anyone tried it?

I used Triad on a field that had a lot of clover and a bit of red in it to clear docks. was cheap spray at about £8/acre but has done bugger all apart from make them look sick for a week or two!

There’s a new one out but unsure on name and when it’s available.

Derrick will know more.

  • Can be used on grass leys that contain red clover if applied in the year after establishment
  • So if you have only just done it this year , No
  • I would not worry about docks in Red clover as you are going to be cutting frequently and they will not get to seeding stage. Get rid of them in another crop.

We has used triad with a bit of spruce (24db?) in the past. Acted like a pause button in both the clover and the docks. If we could have left it longer I believe it may have finished the docks off and the clover likely returned. We couldn’t leave it long enough and needed cutting though so the docks returned albeit black and stunted. I think it also reduced the clover a little.

Hoping this new spray is red clover safe.

This stuff has got more docks than anything else. That much of a mess I might as well fill it with sheep and start again in the spring I think

Doesn’t knock out white clover, not sure about red, iirc red is a bit more susceptible
A sniff of anything will kill red clover.
If it’s a good ley one option is to cut regular before the docks show sign of seeding. The chances are that the ley won’t be much good (sparse) once you’ve killed the docks off anyway. All that will populate the gaps is, you guessed it, more docks.

Been there, got the t shirt!

If its pure clover its is on the label here for Nirvana at 2 litres per ha the first year and 4 litres after that. Its fairly pricey though not as bad as Corum which is a bentazone and imazamox which is also allowed here in clover. An attempt was made to register flufenacet + pendimethalin for use in clover as well but I suspect the overuse of flufenacet in cereals killed off any hope of registration.
