I have those verities on my straights list . How do you know what I have sold unless I have misread you post in that case I'm sorry. But just to add The RFV of those grasses will be lower that the high index ryegrass . Not a mix that I would recommend and you have a mix of heading dates
Let me get this straight you have the varieties on a list but not as a mix?

You also tell us you have been doing the mix for a long time but it's not a mix you would recommend? :scratchhead:

I do my own mixes for customers, we do a lot of custom mixes to suit a farmers needs , not a ready made suit from peacocks lol . I said I would not recommend it with Red clover cutting ley ,but that s me . You do what you like

Read what Teagasc have to say about red clover cutting leys, Watch Fermentation and use the right grass to aid fermentation also being carefull with heading dates

A great ley when mixed with ryegrass, festuloliums and cocksfoot but it is not as drought resistant as I expected. When cut twice and grazed in the autumn we find 3 years to be the limit. Overall very good though and we have put more down and keep experimenting with mixes.

@HarryB97 do you bale it?
If so how many bales do you end up with per acre after two cuts and how many layers of wrap do you put on?
All round baled with a Kuhn round baler with roughly 14 knives in it from memory. It’s wrapped after baling by a trailed wrapped in the field applying 6 layers of Silotite. First cut varies from 6-10 an acre and second cut 4-8 an acre. These are dry silage bales at 40-50% dry matter and very dense bales!

As above, don’t skimp on the wrap. Some of the clover stems can be quite hard and can easily puncture the wrap

If sowing as a straight you want 5-6kg/ha.

It needs good pH, good P and K indices. These are very very important.

Makes a good firm seed bed and roll it down after drilling.

Beautiful crop, used to enjoy growing it. 2,4DB is so expensive but can't do much else. Pinnacle really really hurts it.

I would put a break crop in between grass and straight red clover as you can't really deal with perennial weeds in it.

Interesting as looking into options for upping protein for the dairy cows in the pit silage. Not feeling the love over on the lupin thread. how often can you cut red clover? If you grow it on its own, would layering it in the pit with alternate loads of grass work ok, as we box grass in and have that option To alternate fields. Or does it really need that grass growing in with it?

I could talk about red clover and cutting mixes all day.

Perun, in particular will not last forever. It's a massive plant and it makes a big bang but is short-lived. 3 years will be about your limit, certainly don't expect 4 from it. If you want to try and go longer you will need to opt for the tetraploid PRGs which will cost you some overall annual yield.

I would consider putting 1kg of timothy in these mixes as well. Tiny seed so added ground cover. A diploid IRG could be considered to help fill in the gaps as well but again 3 years will be stretching it.

This is the sort of thing that really really wants to be put in behind a cereal wholecrop or in with some spring barley. I am sure someone will remember the sowing rate for the spring barley I used to use as I can't remember it.

Should get 3 cuts .
high sugar grass companion is the best option but if not use an aditive and wilt for 24 hours
