How long before I can plant another red clover/rye grass crop?
Have got a field of 1st wheat after a 4 year red clover/ rye grass ley as a break crop, grain and straw for our own use, but want to get back to clover ASAP as bought in protein prices are sky high and with soya being frowned upon it is an excellent crop for us.

Right away, most likely. Did you have any production issues with the rc/rg before you went to wheat? If so, what?

The only factor controlling when to sow again with an RC mix is pests. Stem Eelworm being the biggest problem then a 5-7 year break is recommended. If you have no such problems then carry on.

Should get 3 cuts .
high sugar grass companion is the best option but if not use an aditive and wilt for 24 hours
Only 3 cuts?

We get 4 from festeoliums and RC then graze with youngstock.
CP will fall away Rapidly once in Flowers . 1st cut 1st year it needs to flower to help it establish but after that cut with small amount of flower visible, thus the importance of choosing the right companion grass so you hit them both at the correct growth stage
Dont cut earlier than 6 weeks apart ,6 to 8 weeks is ideal , and don't cut after early October

Why 6 weeks?

We cut with 1st cut 14th May
34 days later 2nd cut
46 days later 3rd cut and
37 days later 4th cut.
Heifers then went into it mid October.

The time to utilise a ley is when its doing well and harvest those nutrients with the cash crop ie cereals.

You have more options to get a ley right than a cereal crop.
