Red diesel fraud

Why does the Mafia make an example of someone who crosses them?

Because when you're running a racket you want your marks to pay up quietly without you having to do too much. You want voluntary compliance with your demands. So people who cross you get worse treatment than those who merely break the laws of society, pour encourager les autres.

Once you start regarding the State as the ultimate protection racket you see it for what it is, and begin to understand the need to avoid its tender ministrations as much as possible.

Yes I understand that it would be subject to abuse but as Wombat says this system is used already. They must have a way of controlling abuse of that system.

Whatever scheme is put in place will be open to abuse, by having red diesel it makes it possible HMRC to dip your tank and catch you out. Besides which, paying double for the fuel and then waiting for a refund would badly hit many farmers cash flow.

The rebated / lower taxed fuel is marked, in this case with red dye, this way it can be tracked. Being able to claim some of the duty back on clear diesel would be a free for all as it would be impossible to trace it and it could be sold on and used for non agricultural use.

Remember seeing a documentary about the ira years ago and they were allegedly making white diesel out of red and the secret ingrediant was fullers earth or what we know as cat litter.red was filtered through this and it removed the dye.was only discovered by the large amounts being purchased.under cut fuel suppliers and made a packet

The fullers earth approach used to work, but as I understand it things have moved on and there are newer additives that are much harder to filter out. Besides which, VOSA/HMRC etc can (and do) test it - it is possible to detect both the dye and other additives down to just a few parts per million. A big issue with the fullers earth approach is that it generally contains bentonite and/or other volcanic ash grits, that if not properly filtered after the dye removal process out they can wreck diesel engines - especially modern ones.

Do you think the Germans and Swiss would run something as a free for all :)

I don't

Germany and Switzerland are different in that society is generally more "correct" and less likely to commit such frauds. They also have better civil services that are better joining the dots together to spot fraud. As it happens you can buy red/yellow diesel in Germany for "heating" & you are less likely to have your tanks dipped, but if you do get caught you face a much stiffer judicial system.
