Few things changing here so im have to think about fuel .
Highly unlikely id use 100ltr a year , if i bought by the 200ltr drum am i going to have issues with taking up water with modern shite.

I use more petrol than that in the quad bike and am by no means a heavy user. I buy my petrol in 20 litre jerrycans and in fact I just bought 20 litres lunchtime today.

A local petrol station sells red from a pump and just the other day it was only a couple of pence more expensive per litre than with my combined order of 5500 litres. They are far more diligent raising the prices for their main consumer pumps.

I Can be Stored inside no problem
Are there some tampon things to go in barrel ?
But i guess a gauze on a diesel funnel should do a job .
Had access to a big pumped tank but no more......

For 100 liters a year use cans. store them inside where the temp is stable and dry, a drum could work if it's kept inside in a stable temperature, but can you really get delivery for one drum? or would you haul the drum yourself?

There's an illustration in the MF 135 user manual of diesel stored in barrels horizontally in a rack with a lean-to roof over which I am sure would be as good today, but I think you are meant to have a collection area underneath these days to catch leakages to stay legal. I stored a barrel on end which collected snow on the top. When it melted water was drawn into the fuel, so not a good idea. Anywhere there are fishing vessels will also have red diesel for sale. I collect mine in 5 gallon cans. Just have to complete a declaration that it's for agricultural use.

For 100 litres I would just buy white as and when you need it.
If your 200 litre drum was stored inside it shouldn't have any issues.

Local garage did have red on the forecourt but stopped since April blaming government rules.
There can’t be any such rules because a couple of my local stations are still retailing it.

If you’d use less than 100 l a year, what’s the maximum amount you’d use at one time ?
surely just a 20 l ( or even 10 l ) jerry & buy some fuel at a servo when you need it is the best bet ?

I am 100% arable on over 2000 acres, with 2 distinct cropping seasons a year ( cool season crops / warm season crops ). I do have 10,000 l storage on the farm, but seeing as how I don’t live out there anymore, I don’t like leaving fuel there now due to lack of security. So, when we are doing high useage operations ( basically planting or harvesting ) I just buy fuel daily & take it out with me.
For a few cents a litre extra compared to buying in bulk, the risks / hassles with storage just isn’t worth it.
PS - at harvest we could be using 2000 l a day . . .

It would be an expensive day if you set off down the road in the UK with a car trailer and an ibc container full of red diesel on it. May get away with it if you throw a sheet over it so no police or ministry can see what it is. Would be ok if it was a proper fuel bowser meant for towing on the road bunded, and the such like. If we have the crusher or plant or the tractors working away from home which is often then we have a fueling service that we book and they turn up on site with a tanker every day and tank up everything it does not cost much more than we pay to fill the home tanks and its safer and easier.
Still see red pumps on the forecourts of fule stations on motorways and big haulage roads to top up the temp-controlled units on haulage transport.

I don't use much at all and did have a 50gal drum of red lying around for a few years.
It was rusty and watery by the time I had used 2/3 of it.
I now buy white in a 10 litre jerrycan as and when- I'm sure the old beast runs better on it anyway .

Can't use cherry on fridge units in the UK since April & with plant kit banned as well I think that you'll see a big reduction in pumps serving red.
There can’t be any such rules because a couple of my local stations are still retailing it.
Anybody supplying red has to make reasonable efforts to ensure that it is being sold to persons with a legitimate reason for using rebated fuel, if HMRC decide that they've not done enough then the seller can be liable for the lost duty & VAT on all the red sold where the records are inadequate. Some retailers are prepared to take on the extra work or risk, for others it's not worth it.
