Red or white

Have had builders in to help build retaining wall with rocks that have been ploughed up in the past. He has asked if I could supply some for his next job. Would be using tractor and trailer so would I have to be on white diesel?

When alternating between agricultural use (red) and other road use ( white) is there an expectation from HMRC or VOSA whoever enforces the rules that you will drain the tank between use or have separate fuel tanks on the same tractor?
I understand that when they dip the tank on a van they can detect the red dye but if you have put white diesel in the tractor fuel tank for non agricultural work and have a fuel receipt to go with it can they test for white? I doubt it.
I don’t run my tractor on the road so just curious.

No you cannot have 2 tanks, 1 red 1 white, on same vehicle.
This was looked into a few years ago, for a blower lorry to unload on red.
As for the red dye being detected in a tank it's a myth,
Who has ever seen red filters ?, the red dye is only to visually tell the difference.
But there is a chemical marker in red when tested, you can remove the dye but not the marker, and that is what they look for.

Timber boy's looked into years ago and the answer was no, they thought it unfair as some of them were doing miles offroad in woods and then sat loading on white. Have heard plenty of stories of landrovers with a tank under each seat, the passenger sat on the red tank

Why not charge him a going rate for the rocks including the price of a haulier. The end user can pay for it. If it’s another farmer he can collect and you are still £s in and have no hassle

You can cart your own produce using red.

But I doubt you can claim rocks as produce, so technically should be on white.

But are VOSA going to be hiding behind a granite tor in Dartmoor. I doubt it, so take the risk.

Needs a separate leak off (return) pipe with a three way valve into each tank as well otherwise cross contamination would occur.

Some of the ex military vehicles had two tanks one each side the passenger one was filled under the seat, so sone enterprising gentleman decided they could quite easily leave the right full of white but cut off. Sadly he opened his mouth a bit wide in Northampton market and as he left Customs were waiting for him, that cost him as it was obviously deliberate fraud

To be honest , I think you are OK to take stones off your ground to your building friend, but if you value your trailer, I would get a lorry. Dropping large stones will crucify the floor

It may well be the chemical marker in red which they can detect and the dye is purely just for visual purposes. But everyone who says the dye doesn't stain can't have looked very hard. It may take a while but any clear fuel hose tank sight glass or clear plastic container you might carry fuel in eventually end up discolured/brown.

They are using sleepers now so no worries. I'd told him from the start would be better if I just supplied the stone and he organized collection because it would have probably more hassle than it's worth

It would have meant going on the dual carriageway so thought I'd better check. Quite happy doing local on red

That’s brown not red, it’s the oil in the fuel. Look at your heating oil sight gauge…
