Dad always said 'turkeys are a game bird' and should be treated the same as pheasants, grouse and the like, trouble being the general public buy one once a year and have no clue how to handle it.

They get better with hanging a time with the guts still inside them,no food 24 hours before slaughter so the crop was empty. Once you cut into the bird to dress it is when the best before starts.

Even a well looked after bird can smell inside the cavity, the answer was a paper towel with vinegar and salt on it, wipe it round the inside and the smell went away for a two or three days.

Sometimes a customer would bring one back because they'd got it home and it had a bit of a smell when the opened the bag, simple take it into the back of the shop wipe it round and then give it back to the customer, apologise and tell them you'd exchanged it for one slightly bigger, customer goes away delighted.

Probably couldn't get away with it these days.

Well that badge doesn’t really influence me if I’m honest. I judge with my eyes and my nose, and my hands and my taste buds and past experience. I have bought carrots all of which were Red Tractor assured, but some were like silage, some very good. It’s not a quality mark, it’s a mark to say they have a file full of procedures back in the farm somewhere that get looks at once a year. So alright, maybe it does help a bit on the safety side. I’ll agree with that. But would you buy an assured cull ewe out the pen for you Sunday dinner? RT has got nothing to do with real quality. It’s just a basic safety standard at the best of times and we get no premium for it.
More to the point my sprayer is sitting in the shed with a current MOT doing nothing. The MOT runs out mid Jan. So I need to drag the testing man out in a time of record covid cases and probably a frost to test my sprayer that won’t be used for 2 months just so I can carry on selling my wheat which is about to be loaded. It’s that kind of pedantry imposed on the peasantry that really grinds my gears.
Wait to get your sprayer tested, you will be re admitted once its tested again, I gained 2 months this year on mine by forgetting to get it done
