Oh dear Red Tractor now look where your precious brand is. All over the media for the wrong reasons.

We are asking fresh poultry to travel 100's of miles, making who knows how many pit stops. Of course things are on occasion going to go wrong. It's not RT, it's the food system that is at fault.
And sometimes the customer doesn't help, they picked up a turkey on the 23rd, not eating it while the 26th, came back on the 27th complaining it smelled

After questioning it turned out they hadn't enough room in the fridge, so kept it on top of the wardrobe in a centrally heated bedroom.

Well at least they will be able to trace that turkey back to the farm it was reared on as it was RT.......cough cough !!!


In fairness, it's probably not RT's vault. Most food scares happen after the product has left the farm.

Last time I was in a Tesco was about 12yr ago and the fridge aisle was swimming in water from broken fridges..do they still use the same type? 🤭

It should be fully traceable - from the store it was bought in - to the van/lorry that delivered it to the store - to the warehouse where it was held - to the van/ lorry that collected it from the point of slaughter - to the bloke that killed it - to the vehicle that took it to the point of slaughter - to the bloke that caught it - to the farmer that reared it.
There will be an enquiry. They'll just say," The stakeholders will all be involved, lessons will be learnt, going forward there will be more checks and paperwork".

.....and next year it'll all happen all over again.

More paperwork is never the answer. From what I've seen when I worked in warehouses corrective action is always more paperwork which just means more gets forged. Short staffed or lazy staff or no space in storage areas. Yes it likely can be traced all the way back but I would hazard a guess it all shows correct on paper.

Factory's trying to pump out more than they have capacity for at busy times usually means things sit out of temperature when being loaded/unloaded for longer than they should due to lack of space.

Same goes for when fridges/freezers are being restocked in supermarkets. Product will sit out to long.

The likelihood is the food chain has failed at multiple points causing this. however everyone will try to play the game in proving its not there fault.
 
We collect placenta from newborns for stem cell harvesting which have to be kept cool and processed within 24 hours near Gatwick.
Temperature tags from these folk are the order of the day - they are available in many different specifications so could be used on this type of product - only costs a few pence each.
Maybe RT should insist on their use as part of the cool chain procedure.

I don't know of a food scare that was the fault of the producer.

They have always been due to our suppliers or the processors and retailers.

This is the main reason that assurance is hogwash.

I'm willing to bet that the problem with the turkeys lies at staff shortages not packing the deliveries away into freezers [quickly enough].
