How do they know the weekly usage, tracker or satellite?
Surely its not hard to keep the mileage down .............
Well "I think" we should have something like that over here for looking at the cattle .........

Fill in registration document to limited use when the road tax is due and take it to post office. They wont do any thing until the tax is due, so you will need to reclaim any outstanding months on current licence if its still valid, don't know what you do if its on SORN

I rang the dvla about this on Monday. Was told to send them the log book with "limited use" in section 7/tax class and sign section 8.
Download V10 and V112 forms or pick up from post office and fill them out. Then write a quick letter explaining use and distance, (checking stock and under 1.5km distance between pastures).

Send to DVLA Swansea, SA991DZ

Registered an old Discovery without any letter or explanation; just download form (V10?) and send in the reg.document and they sent back a new V5 document classed as Limited Use. Wasn't aware of 6 miles a week maximum; but definitely 1.5km maximum trip between land that you own or in your occupancy.
Do not be tempted to break the rules on the 1.5km. The plod or VOSA probably won't catch you; and 999 times out of a 1000 you will be okay: until, for some reason, you have an accident that involves a big claim against you. Then your insurance will be invalid; and in a worst case scenario you could lose everything.

I'm sure there's no 6 miles a week restrictions?
However I have insured ours as a normal road going vehicle and mot'd it just incase it was involved in an accident.

So I take it the reg. document says 'Limited Use' ? Can you then insure for a different class than stated on the reg. document; and is the only advantage thus being able to use red diesel then? I would assume the insurance for road going is dearer than a 'limited use' and also the cost of the annual MOT. If you are running on red diesel and involved in an accident a few miles from home will the insurance cover you do you think? Interested to know the practicalities of your idea.

I think the 6 mile/week rule relates to the use of red diesel rather than the limited use category, and I know that you are obliged to keep the vehicle in a roadworthy condition, regardless of the fact that a MOT is not required...although it may help demonstrate roadworthiness in the event of an incident.

Definition above is correct, no maximum of 6 miles(y)

Quite true but often the limit is stretched.
With regard to insurance, Tractor insurance however has no such limit except within the territorial limits of the UK, If I took my tractor to Scotland cover would still apply even though I have broken all sorts of VOSA laws, 15 mile rule, red/white diesel and operators licence rules.

As I said tractor insurance is fine,3rd party liability is just the same as a private motor policy, incidentally have you specified business use on your motor policy?
MOT makes sense as you have to keep the vehicle in a roadworthy condition, MOT is evidence of that(y)

on the day it passed it was to a mot standard you still have to maintain to a road worthy condition which would need written evidence such as inspections sheets etc if you want to be pucker

Well there's maintenance and there's passing the test, one can be quite a bit more expensive than the other and for not much reward. Especially true as a vehicle gets older ............
