Please check the wheels nuts as a routine.

None of us want this to haunt us for ever us a day.

And while you got nuts on our minds check yours or the other halves out at the same time!

Did you know that you should use a torque wrench (set correctly) to tighten wheel nuts on large machinery?

I know from experience that the worst thing you can do is to overtighten them as this stretches the threads on the studs.

When my NH T8040 had less than 20 hours in it, planting grain sorghum with a 12 metre linkage planter ( JD precision vacuum boxes, 12 rows at 1 metre spacing, but still pretty heavy ), I was turning on the headland & felt the tractor give a lurch . . .
I had lost most of my wheel bolts & had broken two - the only reason the wheel hadn’t actually fallen off was because the hub & axle were sticking through the rim centre & wouldn’t let if fall off

I learnt my lesson that day, & have always rechecked tractor wheel bolts since

Almost all U.K. HGVs do. Never seen them on a tractor though.
reminds me, I must invest in a torque wrench.
I've got some on mine, and a torque wrench. I had a near miss with a wheel so got sorted. The indicators are only a few quid on ebay, the Norbar was a little more...

I lost a wheel off our Ifor trailer, newish TA510 (wheels on the outside) on a busy road but went straight under the hedge. I mentioned it to a mate and he said two other mutual friends had had the same thing and those wheels are prone to loose studs. I got a tippex mark on each stud now and check each journey.

Same reason as to checking tyre pressures?

If you read the report it was also "unsuitably driven, too fast"

I also seem to remember from reports at the time that it's illegal to use a e-scooter on a public highway.

I think the headline is the media protecting one of their own.

"Unlicensed driver on illegal vehicle dies in RTA" is a bit less "woke"

You dont check your tyre pressures or wheel nut torque every day - which is the point i'm making - and if you read your quoted story - the accident was caused by driving inappropriately and too fast - the under pressure tyre was not the cause - but it didnt help.

If they are torqued to spec today - why do i need to check them tomorrow?

Yes you need a regime to check them regularly- but daily is overkill?

They need to be torqued after correct fitting, then after a short period, say 100km on a truck. Make sure there's a good policy in place for re torqueing if the vehicle is driven by multiple people.
After that regular visual checks for signs of them coming loose, which is where the plastic indicators help.
Just make it part of your pre trip, assuming you do one.
