Removing a JD 551 Loader

Hi All,

Can someone please give me a step by step guide on how to remove a John Deere front end loader (551 model). It has a multidock system.

I know the advice is to have a bucket attached, however all i have for the front of her is a bale handler. Would there be sufficient weight in it, or would i be best sitting a bale on for added weight?

Also when i take the pins out to lower the stands i assume that's all that's required, i.e. there are no pins to be inserted into the stands to keep them in place?

Any help is much appreciated as want to get familiar with the process as it cant be rocket science, but want to ensure I'm doing it safely. And don't need it on full time/don't want to wear pins etc.

Thanks in advance as always.

I have one similar (can't remember the number).

Lock the boom bounce off. drop the legs of the loader and lock in position. You'll need an attachment that can crowd forwards and lift the tractor for this bit..... lower the loader so the legs are six inches or so off the ground and crowd the attachment forwards to lift the tractor slightly/weight off/not off the ground. Pull the pins out of the brackets, crowd the attachment back and the legs will touch the ground (be careful not to put tractor weight on the legs) and loader lean forwards and detach. Lock hyd tap, unclip pipes and drive away. It works better with an attachment that has a bit of weight.... I use an old dung grab.

Need to put the pin that holds legs up through the legs to lock them in position. Bale spikes pallet forks or bale handler will all work fine. If pull lift towards lift position after loader separates from tractor it is easier hooked on again. Also taking it off on flat concrete helps.

Thanks, these pins are quite small if I’m correct? I must look and see where they go through.
So tilt my bale lifter forward to ease pressure off main pins, remove, and tilt bale lifter back towards me to lift it off the hook? All while keeping the legs slightly off the ground?

Kind of. When you release the pressure of the tip of the attachment the legs will contact the ground and the whole loader will pivot on them up and off the bucket hooks. Does that make sense? I don't know.

i was only trying to emphasise that the legs shouldn't be used to release the load off the pins in the brackets.

the Long R pins that stow the legs are used to prevent the brace from slipping out when in the extended position..... you'll see.

Now Then..
You won't need a bale on and a bucket / fork is possibly more robust. However, you can only work with what you have..
So,,,,,,, park somewhere level, attachment pointing down somewhat push the loader down with the brakes released so that some weight comes off the front axle. Put transmission in park, exit tractor left door, remove mounting pin, lower left loader stand, right loader stand (there'll be a gap under them), remove right pin. Then, back on the seat, release the park lock and brakes, roll the attachment back, the stands will lower and the loader will release from the mounting frames. Then disconnect the multidocking and reverse away.
Refitting is a reversal of this, though you may have to manipulate the lift rams too but don't hold the tractor with the brakes, let the loader pull it in..
As I said, a bucket is better than the bale squeeze..
