Removing rust before painting

Big flakey bits probably a needle gun or possibly a sand blaster? If there just rusty I’d be tempted to lash rust converter at it and paint on top of that. A customer of mine uses it and it works wonders

Iv just spent a week doing our sheds. Found a small angle grinder( take handle off) with a cupped wire brush the best and a thin wire brush for the tricky to get to bits. ( need a full face mask not just goggles ) Johnstones do a paint that needs no under coat and can go onto rust called smooth finish for metal £80 for 5 litres but goes a long way.

Dad painted the shed frame with used EP90 gear oil in 1985 when the paint started flaking. (Built in 1978). That oil has lasted well to this day where it’s not directly exposed to weather or livestock. I’ve given the lower parts of the legs a good lathering of hammerite after using a needle gun, hand wire brush and sometimes one of those Brillo pad like things on an angle grinder. I also heat the legs with a space heater to drive out moisture before painting. Goes better. Buts only the bottom couple of metres that sit in muck that get this treatment. The rest is fine with gear oil.

Diesel contains significant wax, so it won't dry like petrol, or flow clean like oils will, part will evaporate and leave the wax. You can dissolve old candles in diesel by sitting in the sun or heating up.

It's not that expensive to get amobile blaster in, they will probably have a paint pot that you can borrow too. We moved a 90x60, 25yrs ago, and blasted and repainted it. Still perfect to this day, but we did get hold of some of that white primer that they use on gas installations.

I remember pointing to the rust on a ten yr old shed due to dung 45 yrago
Grandfathers response was “ I ‘ll never paint it” and he didnt.
No stitch in time back then.

Use a wire brush or sandpaper to scrub off as much rust as you can. Then, hit it with some rust converter or a rust-inhibiting primer to seal it and prevent more rust from forming. After that, you're good to go with your paint.
