Hi all, our Ceres 95x has been failing to crank at the first turn of the key, often refusing after many attempts, (just a single click). Repeated attempts resulted in heat at the key switch-starter energiser terminal. If I take a wire from battery to small spade terminal on the starter it works without fail.
I have replaced:
Key switch
Starter relay
Starter motor
Battery terminals
Alternator( separate fault??)
Cleaned up as many contacts as I could.

After being parked for a few days I discovered cab full of burning smell, key switch had melted, and was well on the way to causing a fire. What’s possible causes of this? Switch damaged from repeated attempts to start or the problem that’s stopping it start in the first place?
TIA

Now Then..
I guess you need a multimeter. See how many amps the starter takes at the little spade on the starter. Then try it at the keyswitch. If there's a start relay there should be very little power at the keyswitch.
I always thought they were poorly wired. I bypassed most of the worklight wiring with new fuses and relays. When it was on the buckrake at night I had a burning smell from the fusebox.
Do they have a start relay?? I can't remember without looking at the wiring diagram..

Hi Tractortech, there is one like this screwed to bulkhead by the fuel tank,

I will have to see if I can refit the original key switch, some of the connectors are fairly toasted, I was concerned about the work lights myself and swooped the halogen bulbs out for Led ones.[emoji106]

Is that not the glow plug relay?? If I've time, I'll look at the wiring diagram later..

You could well be right, I may have jumped to the wrong conclusion based on its appearance!! It does seem to be a tractor that likes to warm it’s fuses, had the light/horn/indicators fuse warm, then the stalk died, first the horn went, then the lights but a new stalk sorted that.🤞Electrics are not my favourite…….[emoji36]

What safety start device is there ? If you can start engine by going direct from battery to starter ... sounds to me you have wires crossed fitting new parts... you should be looking at checking all wiring or you could be filling in claim form, do not tell insurance you have been trying to fix it yourself as you won't be covered

Just the usual, won’t start in gear, won’t start if the pto left in gear either. Is that correct about working on your own machines? The last time I claimed on a tractor for damage the NFU paid me to fit the parts?
