An interesting aside perhaps . Dad was renting a farm in the 60ts in Cheshire , he moved to West Wales bought a farm 3 times the size on borrowed money and the total interest and repayments worked out cheaper than the rent paid . How would that calculation work out today ?
The rate at the time would have been 4.5 %
A wise move
Probably similiar today but the banks wouldnt lend today like the 60,s

To be fair why should our businesses be any different from the rest of them. I know lots of people who run their own business and they have all said the same thing, keep cash in business and not to let it out, all stopped paying rent, PAYE etc what else can they do.

listening to Duncun Bannertine and he was saying exactly the same thing. These guys haven’t got where they are by being a good sport.

but farming does have a great old fashioned morals, keep a stiff upper lip while getting shafted but don’t rock the boat or else you become one of them new types.

That's fine and I agree but what gets me is that farming shouldn't just 'join in' with other business in this situation. Our problems have been with us a lot longer than anyone else so why haven't we had the balls to rock the boat last year or the year before that..........?

I agree business by business basis, but if your product is being wiped out, you need to make a decision based on that. Just because you are comfortable doesn’t mean your neighbour is.
I think a lot of the problem is because of the subsidy in farming which in a way gets in the way with business decisions

Just a small time sheep farmer here and it’s going to cost me a lot of money between now and September of lost revenue from camp sites/holiday let’s/ other non farming enterprises. All my ground is rented :(
What's that got to do with the price of farmland?

I can't be the only person fed up with the constant moaning of people who have hardly been affected by the virus.

Can't go out for a picnic, can't watch the football, can't go to the pub, have to look after my own kids for a change, my business might suffer losses for a few months, etc etc. SO WHAT? Hundreds of thousands of people are dying before there time, millions around the world are losing their jobs.

If you've still got a job (even if you are on furlough) and your health, you've got sod all to moan about.

I think the main point is that the OP’s business hasn’t been wiped out overnight by the virus. It’s bad weather that’s hit us hard, but that anything farmers produce will find a market and probably a decent one.

In summer 2011 the weather was cool, dull and dry from April to September. Yields were well down and the price went up. A local customer said to me “I would rather have a small heap worth good money than a big heap worth f**k all”

Many people are facing financial ruin and hardship. Farming will suffer but not be wiped out. Every acre will be farmed. If it’s not for certain people then they need to get out.

If the weather and customers don’t cheer up then I will be out of business before Christmas, but there’s chuff all I can do about that and I’m not going to expect anybody else to work for nothing on my account.

Perhaps people who think like you and Clive would be better off re-locating to the US and vote for Trump. Clive was bemoaning that he is missing a member of staff, his father who is not part of the PAYE scheme, yet he also has ample reserves. Money is not everything, clearly to some it is and material items. You will be pleased to know that should you or any member of your family unfortunately succumb badly to Covid-19, you will be admitted to an NHS hospital and be treated by medics on the front-line who will selflessly treat you. Virtually none of these medics will be involved in private work. If all medics thought like you there would be no A&E, no ICU's etc as there is no private work, instead we would just have plastic surgeons and people coining it in on hip replacements, few days a week, before hitting the golf course. You do know there is no such thing as private ICU or A&E units in the country?

When the grain price went to £200/tonne and you made a killing, did you offer your landlords any extra rent?

in some cases yet, contract farm clients got more of course and some rents we pay are based on the price of 1t of wheat do get more in high price years

my post wasn’t necessarily refering to my own (fortunate) situation, I’m thinking more of farmers currently pouring milk down drains or with no winter wheat planted on 100%tenanted farms

agree money isn’t everything by a long stretch, so surley that also means the same to a landlord.... I am not saying I am not paying my rent, all I am pointing out is what is the difference between a business affected by corvid 19 and a farm businessaffected by corvid 19.

The difference is that most ag businesses are probably classified as micro businesses (employ less than 9 people). Duncan Bannatyne is in a difference class and is protecting thousands of peoples jobs.
