Repairing classics as an investment ?

I've made a little out of restoring Japanese motorbikes as a hobby. The only real way that I made any money was to buy two or three of the same model and make one tidy one out of them and then sell the second hand parts to others.
The models that seemed to make the most money were the ones where people had some emotional attachment; their first bike (usually 50cc or 125cc), first proper bike (250cc) or the bike that they had a poster of on their bedroom wall (500cc) AND they are in a financial position to buy now regardless of the cost.

In the tractor world I would say the equivalent of that is 1980's tractors where people would have spent large part of their lives sat on (90hp + 4WD tractors), or tractors that they would have 'learnt on' (MF 550, MF 265, IH 454 etc). Although you are always going to be competing against the tractor exporters for those type of tractors.

The only people that I saw making any real money out of the restoration business is the people buying and selling NOS (New Old Stock) parts.
Their business model was buy low (from dealers who wanted rid of parts from age old bikes), and sell high (to punters desperate to keep their old bike going). Maybe there is a need for NOS supplies in the Tractor world?
