As above. Hitch popped off jeep the other day . Never happened before. Was reversing with 2 ton on behind and trailer popped off. I've noticed the key type that secures nrhe ball hitch moves right back when you push it . The triple lock handle slot allows you the ball to ttavet maybe 30 mm. See pics .All advice welcomed. Ps new hitch like for like is 200 plus. Trailer is quite old .
Edit can't attach pic for some reason

Would it be fair to say the slot that handle lifts up in is allowing the spud that catches ball to rise up off the ball. I'm not against replwreplac but means having to fit conversion plate to match existing hitch holes .

Our ancient IW has the same hitch and the same problem. It's the square hole in the sprung catch is the problem. The rest of the hitch is good and tight. We rarely use the trailer but when we do, we put a bolt through the locking hole to stop the handle rising. M10 bolt with nylock nut = pence and the hitch is literally as safe as when it was new.
PS. put a new bolt through the front hole also while you're at it.

And we wonder why there's a drive to have MOTs for trailers and the likes. That thing is worn, and is the only thing controlling two tonne of steel at speed. I'm sure I have one as bad here, and I'll be looking around this lazy Sunday afternoon.

Thanks for the reminder OP, there's wearing parts in everything, and the hitch is often the weakest link.

Thanks very much. Can I sound a bit thick here and say it looks like the slot the handle sits over is allowing travel. What causes this out of interest. I was thinking of weld a bar across and reduce slot so not travel unless thumb catch is pushed forward. Would you have a pic of what you are describing please
Thanks replies so far
