Researching Dutch barn for conservation officer

Bit of an unusual one. Someone I know has planning on a listed barn for conversion. Their planning includes permission to take down an adjoining Dutch barn. However, conservation officer visited recently and was very taken with said barn - apparently there's some minor decorative forging in the frame he likes. As a result he has actually suggested if they can provide some record of the buildings provenance, it would be suitable to convert into another unit.

Trouble is, they can't find a maker's plate and the previous owners have no record. I don't suppose anyone has needed to supply similar and could point me in the direction of any information?

What sort of provenance do you need? Is it just the age of the structure (so old aerial photos/maps may help) or is the maker/designer of importance too? Assume the latter from what you've already said? Interesting that they are being encouraged to keep it in a different form though rather than just being told to leave it alone!

In the early part of the last century when many of these (curved roof)? Dutch barns were built they were done by local blacksmiths or metalworkers, I would have a look around in the area and see if you can find any the same perhaps with more clues as to maker?

I dont to much like the sound of this as you say it sounds a bit strange ,i would proceed with caution, but as @chaffcutter says these type of barns did not stray far from where they were made so have a look around the local area
