Your people say N is required for establishment

As posted above, I wouldn’t apply N on reseeds following grazed roots/brassicas, but I would tickle a bit on after cereals, or after a worn out ley. Those soils will have a low SNS.

Your post doesn’t suggest doing anything different to that, just the same as Derek’s idea of no Nitrogen is to dump a load of 5.24.24 on...;)

2 bags to the acre is 10 units ,I don't consider that a dump [emoji848]

I'm not too bothered where the N comes from, if it's in the soil already then great, if it has to come from a bag like Derek does (despite him saying none is required) then fair enough, as long as the plants get it to develop then the jobs a good un.

As I dont want to put any as a top dressing so im trying some annual clovers , they will fix nitrogen as soon as they get going , root crops im particularly interested in

I have a Westerwolds/IRG/Crimson/Egyptian/RC mix just coming up. I’ll likely still give it a small tickle as soon as it will travel.
It won’t need any more N later though, just a bit more potash probably.

One field or IRG/Crimson I had in last year, I bolstered with 0.5kg of Redstart, which made for a surprising amount of keep. I might do similar with the other field going into that mix.

How long did last years Crimson last ? And what seed rate

Seed rate was about 12 kg/ac iirc. One (DD) field was a slug magnet for some reason, despite pelleting 3x. Masses of little grey slugs, which didn’t touch the grass or Redstart, but hammered the Crimson for some reason.

The other (lightly disced) field didn’t need pelleting at all and the mix did well. The Crimson lasted until the hard frosts, and I did wonder whether it might make it through the winter at one time.
The thin IRG stand in both fields was growing in February, before any other grass was even thinking about it. It had a bit of N when I was doing Winter Barley at that time, and provided a good bit of keep for ewes & lambs through March/April. Both due to be sprayed out for a proper reseed now, but one is bare bones having carried 20 singles/ac until yesterday.

Establishing white clover

Clover leys may follow cereals, roots or brassicas, as these will have
reduced nitrogen levels in the soil, which encourages clover establishment.
know places oversea shear cropping. they crop with grains for 5 years then go in to alfalfa and the cattle farmers get the paddocks back older alfalfa paddocks worked up and in to crop
idea behind it takes out the N and other things out of top soil and forces the roots to go deeper.
