Residue on Milk Meters

Anyone any tips for getting rid of scale/residue on milk meters? Have taken them apart before but very labour intensive and never seem to keep them clean.

Currently running an hot wash in morning with alkaline and cold wash in evening with acid. Maybe wasn't running enough cold water through the parlour for both pre and post rinse so have increased that.

Is hot wash really hot? At the end of cycle? We use plate cooler warm water for pre rinse so pipes not so cold.
Do an acid hot wash.

Has your wash line got any leaks. If our wash line can suck in the smallest amount of air it really upsets the flow rate and force of water through meters.

Plus one for hot acid wash one or maybe two mornings a week.

How much chemical are you putting in? Mine where filthy to the point they weren't registering the correct amount of milk going through them, we went from 150ml of chemical to 1 litre and it took a while but has cleared them and now they're spotless
Also with your hot wash let the water fall on the floor until it gets hot before you put the pipe back into the hot water to circulate, and do you do a post rinse? Something we started doing and you'd be surprised by what can sometimes be worked loose by the hot wash and then get carried away with the cold water

Think this could probably be a problem. The jetters seem to be sucking in a bit of air

I do make sure the hot water has heated up before circulating and running a hot wash for both morning and night at moment to clear the problem. There's plenty of chemical going through but the air thing for sure needs sorted

How hot is too hot??

It's a wee while ago now so I've forgotten the numbers sorry. Actually, it was nearly a decade ago, should probably stop saying new parlour 😅

It was at boiling temp when wash started, the resulting wash was too hot which was forcing the chemical to crystallise, which meant the milk protein was being deposited in the meters etc.

Dropped the boiler temp to 95ish and it cleared up.

I used Alkaline for near 2 years then started getting bother with meters not measuring correctly, switched to once a week hot acid wash and haven’t had any bother since,it’s recommended that you use Alk in a morning and Acid at night but I never use chemical at night just rinse through, don’t even turn the the air blast on.

We had a bad build up in our meters and pipe work and we got a bloke called Rob in from Shepard Agri who reset the wash cycles and chemical concentrations which cleared it up very quickly.
One point he made was that the temperature is not as critical as it used to be as the chemical formulations have now been altered to work at lower temperatures as it is nearly impossible to get some of the big parlours up to such a high temperature without using excessive amounts of hot water.

@eulb ,what’s your choice of acid for hot wash? Must be great acid if you can only hot wash once per week.
You said just water at night, what’s your cold wash in the morning?

I use de-Laval acidkleen,I do a hot wash every morning with Alkaline,I think a lot depends on how hard your water is.
