I think that the MF 698 originally had the same engine as the 1080 and the 595, and it was a really good pulling engine as I recall.

Later 698 models I think had the A4T.236 engine turbocharged to about 95bhp. But the original 88 bhp engine was itself a good pulling unit.

I know of one guy who had his 595's engine blow up at 2000 hours however Massey had a new engine fitted in his tractor F.O.C.
I think by the time the 698 came out they had sorted all the engine problems that dogged The 4.318 (Head gasket problems for one thing) but then Perkins quit making the 4.318 so The later 698 tractors were fitted with the Turbocharged 4.236 and became The 698T (T for Turbo ).

I stand corrected, sir:)

Neither was it's successor, the 595. Kept ours just over a year. It had 4 clutches in 1600 hours and was the last Massey we had.
Our neighbour had a 4 wheel drive 595. what a great numb thing it was. He was pulling a set of gang rolls with it ( Actually one 8 foot roll and two 4 foot rolls ) in 4 wheel drive on some power harrowed land. Just for curiosity he disengaged the drive to the front axle and even though it had heavy cast PAVT rear wheels in his own words " It just stood there and scratched itself into a hole"

Nearly right. 698 has the 4.318.2. Never any engine problems with that engine and when fitted with an after market opico turbo kit was capable of well over 100 hp. in fact any 699 we sold to replace them had to be tweaked to compare. Yes 698t came about after Perkins stopped producing the 4.318.2.

I could add pictures of what I've been on with but I fear it gets all a much of a muchness
Currently the big fendt has been pulled in ready for sorting quite a few leaks
Got a 165 in Im stripping engine down on, the 550 is out of paint just requires putting back together it's cab has gone into filler and paint so things will start happening there
By all means you keep updating with fresh pictures
To me mine seem abit samey.

I've found out from the owner it has been parked up for 20 yrs in a shed
So an odd few leaks from dry seals are allowed.
But the best thing is it hasn't eaten itself from the inside out with corrosion
It is in really good condition and everything works bar a few electrical components
