Retained cleansing, what treatment

What is current thinking on treating retained cleansings.

Should I be trying to pull it away?
Should I be using an antibiotic pessary early on, currently on Bovocycline Pessaries?

I'm still doing what I did 30 years ago, but I guess the world has moved on even if I haven't .I have a bit of ago at pulling it away after 24-48 hours, and put some pessaries in uterus , wait a few days and try again.
We do not seem to have a big problem , rarely see a sick cow as a result, and treat few whites. The cows are not being pushed at around 7500 liters .
Don't seem able to Edit the title block .

If you’re getting a few then the general consensus would be lack of iodine as well as selenium I guess.

Times change and I believe oxytocin, pessaries and routine ABs are not the done thing. We’ll leave a week maybe and give it a gentle tug with some home made grippers (a serrated folding comb type thing about nine inches long, grab and roll up) and pen and strep if there’s a temp or perticularly nasty discharge with it. Don’t over do the tugging.

Not sure the vet would do much more?

Sometimes a little bit of weight in the form of a stone or a half hitch around her tail will help waggle it out.
As above, plenty of selenium and iodine through the water system is largely how we'd address it over here, plenty of minerals make the world go round. Bit of oxytocin never goes amiss as long as you don't overdo it - what are your conception, in calf rates like?
They'll let you know how you stack up compared to everyone else, but if it's not a major issue then it's not.
Definitely don't yank them out :yuck::hungover::stop:

Never hurts to run some bloods though, it can be far cheaper than cutting heads off good cows (y)

We bolus every cow at drying off with tracesure cu/i. Never have any trouble with RC, even with twins. Doesn't help your current problem but prevention is better than cure imo, better than going to the pub of an evening stinking of old cleansing after sticking your hand up there

We know that manual removal is associated with worse fertility. Leave them alone. Oxytocin may be of use in the first 6 hours but not after that. Don't give antibiotics unless sick or high temperature. Selenium or iodine won't help them cleanse once its happened. I personally believe the role of minerals is overplayed and its more a dry cow/calving cow management issue.

I'm keen to tell you to call out the vet more, but please not for this. Leave them alone. Pessaries do NOTHING. May even be harmful.

Thanks for all the replies.
Keep an eye on things and do nothing for a day or two, I like the advice,
and look at dry cow management to prevent future problems.
Hope my summing up is correct, not just what I want it to be.

I would never try and manually remove a placenta as the cotyledons attaching it to the uterine wall could damage or rip it. If it's not dropped after 12/24hrs I would just bundle some of it up so the cow, or another doesn't step on it and it keeps a low constant pressure on it.

Iodine pessaries work really well . Completely stop any horrible smell and will fall off in 5 or 6 days.
I don't have time to find the study now, but they are too caustic and damage the uterus. It needs the effect of bacteria to break down the attachment. They are actually harmful.
