what to you do , lambs can go under a lamp or box next to aga , big calf today found 6.30am cow calved on own ,but calf had got cold , tubed it , rubbed it down really well , covered it in couple towels & straw to try retain body heat , but not looking good
If you can rig up a box with a blow heater so they are breathing warm air (yeah, I know!) that helps with hypothermia as it gets the warmth inside them where its needed.
I think you did just about everything you could in the circumstances, about the only difference here would be a calf jacket as they don't absorb moisture like a towel does. Even so you're up against it and it sounds like one of those situations where very little would have helped change the outcome.
Sorry to hear that. It has been very chilly overnight. Some good suggestons from others - you can hardly overestimate the amount of heat something that big needs to get back up to temp. Like the idea of @Dry Rot of a blower heater so they're breathing warm air too.
Make sure you warm the animal before tubing it , otherwise whilst the idea of something warm in its belly sounds good, you are causing more harm than good. Stupid thing to say, but do find some just have the will to live, some have every right to die, lambs / calves, but overcome everything, some appear to have little to nothing wrong yet fall by the wayside
