I have to be honest it was a bit of a trial to give those in the future some history, it reminded me of "a Farmers life" hudson[?] and put back in my mind what a mixed farm meant, and how much food was worth to employ this many folk.

Thank you. :)
That should be sent to mother teresa to point out the result of abandoning farming to global markets

Abandoned farms would revert to trees and scrub, which will prevent flooding of our towns and cities. They also make an ideal area to re-wild wolves and such like, with less inhabitants around to kick up a fuss. Better still, they already generally have roads and tracks in place, so the urban tourists can drive round and look at 'nature' doing it's thing. (y)

That was uk policy till 1940, when they had to do a sharp u turn and start growing our own again.

Yep, funny how history repeats itself.

Let's hope The Donald's posturing doesn't mean we need another war effort any time soon though, which is the only thing that pushes food security back up the agenda.

A small number of "agri-environmentalists" as the piddling number of farmers left will be termed ,will require to be heftily subsidised to leave a tiny number of sheep knocking about as an invaluable food source for the re-wilded wolves , lynx , lions , Siberian tigers and tyrannosaurus rexes.

You won't be able to "check"your stock by a quad though , you'll need a Chieftain tank for your own safety.

Not that you'll have anything to check of course , they'll all have been eaten.....(n):(

I don't farm. (Have worked on a couple in past)
I don't really understand how subs are awarded or who does or doesn't get them "but" & this is where I get shot to peaces.
Why should farmers get paid subs when others don't?
I run a small fencing & landscape business & I don't get anything unless I earn it. Government "should" make laws to ensure all buyers ie tesco etc pay a reasonable price for everything. Dairy boys getting less than cost of production is crazy.
If a customer of mine buying a product off me was to pay less than production cost I wouldn't be in business, it's wrong to be paid less. This is what needs addressing over should subs stay or go.
Get rid of ALL subs make the big buyers pay the producers enough that they make a profit. Nice in principle but every business should make a profit end of.
No profit no business. Easier to say than make happen I know.

I agree with you.
But it's not going to happen- because government is against 'Guaranteed prices for farm commodities'

Subs were originally bought in to ensure food security. Farms were losing money and not able to produce enough food for the nation. Over the decades the purpose of subs has got lost in translation and now the public only see whingeing farmers complaining about their low income. What the public never see though is food shortages. I'm afraid they can't have it both ways.
