i personally think that toyota UK need a kick up the arse? the world today is smal,l trade and knowledge is easy to get, like me here typing this the world is at my typing fingers, trading worldwide and pricing is easier now than ever ?, going back to toyota i see our friends in the southern part of the world have the latest model, well talk to my dealer , when can i have a demo whats delivery like, are the questions hard to answer ? when in america many years ago we went into a chevy dealership, spoke to an expat who happened to be the saleman, my father asked who long it would take to get a new pickup with the speck he wanted, now their was over 400 different combinations of colour, engine size, etc etc etc, the answer was, i can have the truck you want within 48 hours ?
I agree.I had Toyota uk contact me after I complained about local dealer on social media.they apologised and said they would get dealer to call me.that was 2 months ago and nothing.car sales people have the easiest job in the world.they know every one who comes into their showroom wants to buy a car.not as if they have to go out after the sales.had similar with a Ford dealer 4 years ago.went to get a price and a demo of a truck.salesman said I could drive truck about a mile and that was it.called several times for a price and kept leaving messages over about 3 days but he never came back to me.final call I mentioned I knew the dealership owner and his sons very well and next call would be to them.rep called back instantly.I really think they can’t be bothered.

So , controversial comment..... how many of you call the salesman back when they keep chasing you to make a decision? How many ring then to thank them for their time but to tell them you have bought something else? In my 20 years of selling I’ve had that less than 20 times.... most just stop answering their phone.... it works both ways .
So, did you call them back? 😉
About as many times as I get thanked by the public/supermarkets/retailers for working all hours this time of year to produce meat at below COP, but I dont complain as this is my career choice. Farmers may not be the easiest to deal with but are Tesco’s and other such buyers such a pushover? Not in my experience.
If I ask for a quote generally the reps I deal with are very good and will follow up the quote with a call, when I can say whether they got the order or not, and I like to point out why ( because I find it helpful personally when selling ), but still surprisingly find some that if they don’t get the order it’s taken personally.

It amazes me that these car salesmen expect you to spend 30k on a pickup on the back of a 10 minute road route demo, money must be easy made from Joe public.

Had similar few years back, Peugeot offered me test drive of a model I was interested in with different much more powerful engine as he wouldn't bring a car from sister dealership of spec I was interested in unless I placed an order? Contrast rang Rover dealer, he dropped demonstrator off that evening and said if 24 hour test drive wasnt enough just call him to let him know. Guess which I bought?

Not keen on the ones that keeps chasing you to make a decision. I’ll contact them to say yes, no or you need to be a bit keener than what you’ve quoted while coming to the decision.
I always phone and let the unsuccessful ones know that I’ve bought elsewhere.
Surprised to hear that’s not the norm:(

If I’d had 2 or 3 quotes for something I’d call the dealers who missed the deal thanking them for quoting and say hopefully do better next time.it’s just good manners as far as I’m concerned.

I try to do this too... I will admit, that sometimes I can forget, but is usually an error, not deliberate.

I had one Dealer come back after I had declined his Offer as not competitive, and he was quite shirty... I don't go there anymore

Maybe sales people are more stretched than they used to be, less covering a wider area.
Why would a sales person want to bother with a 8 to 10 k sale when mr big down the road is thinking of changing his fleet of tractors and balers!!

My friend in the trade assures me that a ‘little and often’ approach to sales is better than the once-in-a-blue-moon sale to Mr Big.

Also that £8-10k sale might be the thing that leads into the £80-100k sale in a few years time. in my case the service received on the sale of a £750 yard scraper led to me buying a £50k Loadall from same firm.

All about taking that long term view.....

I did that once, rang the dealer to say he was unsuccessful, he had a rant about how he chased about for the sale (he just sent some brochures and quote in the post), the winning dealer did a lot more and bought the manufacturers rep with him when discussing matches features.
Leaves a bad taste in the mouth and makes me reluctant to do it again.

Was that a sulky combination drill?

Totally agree, but time is money and dealers don,t seem to want to spend a bit of time chasing a smaller deal. You would think a 5 minute phone call is worth the trouble all the same.

I usually tell the people who have quoted why I've decided on another supplier, luckily only once has someone reacted like that.
In the mid 1980's a friend was trying to make up his mind which colour Audi Quattro he wanted, the salesman rang and said "come by this afternoon I have something to show you!". He'd only begged and borrowed cars in all 4 or 5 available colours and had them lined up. I'm sure he went far.

for a big deal like that, margins would have been trimmed to virtually zero, those regular farmers that keep on coming back, swopping tractors, bits of kit, they are the bread and butter now. Some of the big contractors, very regularly change colour, no loyalty, and little profit there.
Always ask for best price first time, and buy from where we want, any rep coming back and saying, 'well i could have knocked a bit more off', gets told, 1st quote, only quote, no use coming back after, works well.

Same here, a recent diet feeder purchase arose as the salesman brought the company man with him who listened to what spec I wanted, measured a few sheds and told me what I needed. He wasn’t the cheapest but got the order as he made the effort.

Was I complaining and asking for thanks? I was merely pointing out it works both ways!
